use a grinder with a cut-off wheel for fast and nice cuts....  it makes it easy but you have to have a good hand....

or a sawzall with a high TPI count and either tape your fenders up or keep the foot of the sawzall away from the paint..

Then again there are sheetmetal nibblers..  i hate em lol.... but that might be just me

when i do it i leave a little lip (1/2") that i can fold over to avoid that razor sharp edge, sometimes you have to cut reliefs every couple inches (or more) if on a corner....

grinder and cut-off wheel works best for me.  make sure you use a cut-off wheel that has been used most of the way.  smaller diameter wheels make it easier to cut a smooth curve in the sheetmetal.  Once i'm done with the cut-off wheel I go ever it with a sanding wheel to make it look as uniform as possible.  Then for a nice finish you can get some of that rubber door edge protector from the parts store and stick it on the edge of the trimmed area.  It looks really nice and prevents cuts from sharp edges.
