22r exhaust
« on: Oct 25, 2010, 06:34:32 PM »
not sure if this is the right place for this or not. its motor related but its also a newbie question. i need to install exhaust on my new to me toy. its a stock 22r with stock manifold and a new bosal head pipe. i was going to run the exhaust into a 2.5 or 3 inch stack behind the cab because i do plan on going in deep mud from time to time. i want a muffler that is not loud but i dont want stock.

No need for anything over 2" with the stock manifold setup.  As for the quiet muffler, there are differing schools of thought and some people say one is quiet and others don't agree.

does it have a cat still? I had a 1977 2wd toyota with no cat from the factory, ran a Flowmaster on it and loved it. My 83 4x4 HAS a cat, put a flowmaster on it and and kinda bummed, sounds no where near as good as my 77 did

A stack?  Yeah...

You should get the train horns too. :)

I ran 2.25" with a fairly restrictive muffler and I thought it was on the big end for exhaust size on these engines.  I have a buddy that runs 2.5" strait pipe on a 22R and he says he has lost a noticable amount of bottom end. It sounds great though. I would go with the 2" if I were you if your goal is to make the truck work well.

I have the stock manifold, cat and a pro-flo 3 muffler. http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGear/ProductDetails.aspx?PartUniqueID=D717A790-E69D-4690-A710-50EE2937B29C  . I like it's deep sound at an idle, nice sound on acceleration but not loud. No "riceburner" sound like on those "really fast street cars:)    :twocents:

I have a tri-y header and 2.5" tube with a 2.5" magnaflow 18" big body muffler, and it's loud and annoying!  With my previous setup, I was all 2.5" and stuck in an extra 2.25" glasspack to quiet it down for deer season and lost bottom end.  Jetting did not bring it back, the extra restriction seemed to remove my low end snappiness and response.  I'll never neck down small again if running a header, but this shouldn't be the case with the stock manifold.

I know, I know, I was goofin' on you to see if you would catch it...  :)

I was lucky enough to score a $250 truck that allready had a good tri Y header and since it's an '80 20r it has no cat.  I put a glasspack in place of my muffler on my '80 with the stock pipe.  It sounds just like a cheap lawn mower...  really turns heads on the trail!  I'm going for the comic relief/trail sleeper sound so I stuck with the 1 5/8" stock pipe to keep the sound goofy.  I would say the strait through muffler actually helped even with the stock pipe.

So do you think you lost any bottom end with the 2.5" or is it good?

So do you think you lost any bottom end with the 2.5" or is it good?

:nope:  currently, my biggest bottom end drainer is having 33" tires with the stock gears, and my cam should provide a good mid-range bump, but seems to really come alive just over 3,000 rpm.  I was much happier with the truck with full 2.5" exhaust before I started screwing with the jetting and bigger tires.  I have a box of 2.5" mandrel bent pieces that I'll use to make a true free flowing exhaust on my next truck, but it may have a bigger engine that needs to breath  :shhh:
