1980 pickup lift ?s
« on: Oct 21, 2010, 02:48:24 PM »
ive got a 80 toyota pickup 4x4 its stock with 32/11.5/r15 thinking bout lifting it with rough country 3" front and rear springs and putting 33/12.5/r15 with 15/10 wheels thats what i want to do but not sure if its the best thing to do. dont think i have to regear the diffs wondering if i have to do anything with the stock steering  and if any one used the rc lifts. theres the option of nitro 9000 for 50 more or hydro 8000 shocks. truck is going to be my toy not going to be a daily driver. truck has a 22r,webber carb, straight exaust all smog has been removed,4spd tranny everything else is stock that i can tell. your opinions will be helpful in making my get away toy from the insanity of normal life
thank yo and aloha andrew

Don't buy the lift, just get some stock leaf packs and add a few of the long leaves cut to fit in the exsisting packs.  Add a set of lift shackles and it will net about 2.5"-3" of lift and ride and perform way better than that lift kit.  Buy some decent shocks,  in the right length (bilstiens, rancho, whatever you can get) and you're done!

I did this to my '80 and it works great for almost no money.

Then there's f-150 or chevy rears and rear springs up front but that is kind of the next level and you will need hi-steer and all that.

I'm running 33x12.5's with zero lift, on 8" wheels.  My tires rub the pitman arm and springs at full lock.  10" standard BS rims would probably fix that.

the rough country lift is a mild 3 inch lift so you wont have to worry about  aftermarket steering because the stock steering will work fine.

when I lifted my 79 I used some 2wd S10 rear springs  and added them into my front and rear stock leaves and made 3 inches of lift for about 60 bucks.  50 for the S10 springs and 10 for new center bolts.  this will require some grinding and hammering of the tabs on the springs but its no more work than installing a new lift kit.

you said it has a 4speed.  if its the L43 that has the side shifter and aluminum bell housing then your truck has 4.37 ring and pinion gears.  these work fine up to 32's  for 33's you really need 4.88's especially if where you live is near the mountains.
