welder input needed

I'm thumbing through the paper today and find an arc welder in the middle of this big old ad, and he only wants $75.  I go to check it out and it's a late 60s Tranex 230, and it's in really good shape.  He has two boxes of I think 6011 and 7018, and he thinks the third box was stainless rod, two hoods, some gloves and other misc.  I wanna sleep on it but am pretty sure I'm gonna go back and pick it up.  He didn't have a 220 outlet so I couldn't test it out, but it looks good, and I like the incredible adjustability it has, a crank on top that barely moves the dial unless you turn it a few times.  I'm just curious if anybody has heard of or used one of these, but for $75 I'll probably just take my chance and use it till I can afford a good mig,   Nate

is it AC or DC?  DC tends to be a little easier to run

I'm pretty sure it's AC.  If it's anything like any of the other AC welders I've used it seems pretty easy, but I'm not the best welder either,   Nate

do yourself a favor and try to get into a night class at your local community college.  usually 1 or 2 days a week, it can be really helpful!

College and me don't get along, and I definately don't have the time.  My first day arc welding was an eye opener, my coworker was welding cletes on a boat dock and he asked me if I wanted to try.  I'd had enough teachings from some really good welders to know what I was supposed to do, and the welder was properly adjusted.  Needless to say, my coworker threw a little tantrum when he saw how much better my first day's welds were compared to his, and made me weld the rest of them on.  If I had a way to download them I'd email you a pic of it, the factory welds broke but mine are unscathed.  I'm not saying I'm great, but I would be confident enough to weld up a cage or bumpers on my own stuff, seeing as I've welded things on that have been jerked on by a 20,000lb winch and they didn't give,   Nate
