I'm trying to figure this out. I have a 90 4runner which could go both ways from what I'm told by cops. Its either a sedan, or a light truck suv so whatever. I concider it a light truck/suv my self. I don't have a back bumper and hate getting pulled over and hasseled for stupid stuff. I can't get a straight answer from dmv, oregon state police or the local city cops. Does any one know do you need a back bumper? I ran my 72 bug for a year with out bumper and never got tickets and a few mini trucks with roll pans. But cops seem to love to mess with 4x4 guys here to have a reason to pull them over then mesure tires and all that junk.

I found light laws that say this:

Oregon

Oregon doesn't have a maximum bumper-height law, but headlights can be only 54 inches from the center of the headlight to the asphalt. Also, the maximum height of a vehicle, with anything on top or loaded, is 14 feet.

If you dont have a bumper, you will need a roll pan for the rear.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

if you have been getting hassled and don't want to get hassled, put a bumper on

i know that if you live in CA, you only need a bumper if your vehicle was originally equipped with one from the factory (your truck is a 90, so it had one)
now there is federal law in place that says you aren't allowed to remove a federal saftey feature (which a bumper qualifies as)

i bought my runner without a rear bumper and never had any fuss. drove it all over oregon for about 4 years that way. In the last two years i made a small simple bumper cause i got closer and closer to dragging gate on rock.

It dosen't bug me but i would have assumed there IS a bumper height law. I kinda thought there was at least that in every state. But :dunno:

My bumper was super simple and i spent not allot of time or money on it.

I used a 120 amp Harbor freight arc welder ($60), the stock hitch mounts (that slide into the frame), and a piece of tube i picked up at the local metal yard ($10), and maybe 4 or 5 angle grinder cutting disc ($5)

I got protection from rocks at break over, also from cars and vans in a rear end collision. a truck would more than likely kill my tail gate but then i could cut it off and dove it.

Could help ya make one, i don't remember if your around p town or not.

gotcha, i remember the winchester pics now.

Anyway, i hadn't welded in years, and although i kinda knew what i was doing i was not on par. It was simple enough that i think anyone could do it if they read a simple how to. bad welds can be ground down and tried again. you'd be surprised.

Sorry, :dunno: guess kinda been ranting off topic, your looking for the laws. thought id share  :hammerhead:

Cool early thanks for the heads up. I do like that bumper and it seems like a good idea, I'd fab(well my attempt) to do some side protection to. So you pretty much just welded on to the stock mounts that are there? I'll get a pic up tomorrow of what my rear looks like I got the stock bumper mounts I think and a non factory hitch.

i have a few friends that are cops and they say it is all upto the officers interpretation of the law. i ran without a rear bumper for a long time, as long as you have your plates on the front and rear most ends of the vehicle and have liscence plate lights, you "should" be ok.

Thats pretty much what I'm thinkin. I just hate goin out havin fun on the trail or sand and on my way home and gettin lit up. Or after a 11-14 hour day at work which is a tues-sunday thing.

yea, i cut it down. but i don't have the ability to cut 1/2 plate very well so i used what i had. i can highlift the rear with it. and like i said, im protected from some people. (edit: i always planned on adding gussets to it but it worked so i never messed with it. thought about adding a hitch and id do allot more to strudy it up.)

I have always done as much as i can to not get pulled over. Like in the runner on 35's and half doors, i keep my LP clean/current and run the half doors because of the mirror, also run mudflaps. I make sure my lights work, cause thats a stupid reason to get pulled over. And in my lowered euro, i didn't tint the windows, i sit up straight, and i don't wear a hat. Sad to say but i think these things help me from having to even talk to blue. No problem with em but id rather have a beer at a bar with a cop instead of getting asked to leave my vehicle by one.

It really doesn't matter with the cops.  I had been pulled over many times.  When I worked swing shift was the worst.  They could watch me pull out of work at midnight, and they would still light me up.  With the assumption that I had been drinking.  And they always said I had a lic plate out.  But it was just the fact that the plates were crappy plates that didn't reflect light well.  (Factory defect, but not enough for me to pay $150 for new plates)
