locked up
« on: Aug 09, 2010, 07:45:29 AM »
just installed a new 22r. used a timing chain cover off of a dual chain motor on a single chain motor. didn't have any trouble mating the motor to the tranny. when everything was done, tried to start it, and it would not turn over. could not even turn it with a breaker bar. the timing chain covers look the same, but could this be the problem :crossed:

yea it's timed correctly. even though i purchased the motor complete(long block) from a reputable toyota motor builder, i checked it out' don't need bent valves.  they told me the front covers wouldn't fit. my old timing chain cover had a crack, so i used a different one. they looked identical. did i miss something? :inthedark:

sorry,,, let me elaborate ,,,the motor i replaced had a single timing chain, the timing chain cover was from a dual chain motor. again, i say, they looked the same.

well what year is the block? 81-84 22r's had a taller deck height and the 85-95 22r's had the shorter deck.

so are you saying that you HAD a single chain engine in the truck THEN you dropped in a new engine with a single chain and put a dual chain cover on?

still a little unclear as to what EXACTLY you did here. More precise details are needed to help you out here!

the short story is: the timing chain cover is from an early 22r which had dual timing chains/gears... the motor is a later model, single timing chain/gears set up.    can this early cover rub against something and keep the motor from turning over

if you suspect the cover take it off and crank the engine without the coil hooked up (dont want it to start and blow oil everywhere)

well the top two bolt holes on the early covers will NOT bolt up correctly, they are taller and YES you mostly have your chain binding up on the cover. Thats why LCE sells the DUAL CHAIN conversion kit which has a special machined cover to clear the dual chains and bolt up to the block correctly on the later models....

"Center Line of the Main Journal to Deck"

    * Early 20R Blocks 75-80         9.120"
    * Early 22R Blocks 81-84         9.120"
    * Late 22RE Blocks 85-95        8.930"

"Oil Pan Rail to Deck"

    * Early 20R Blocks 75-80           11.280"
    * Early 22R Blocks 81-84           11.280"
    * Late 22RE Blocks 85-95          11.090"

Early model blocks/timing covers are 0.190'' TALLER than the Late blocks/timing covers

Hope that clears it up- you need a LATE model timing cover for your LATE model block!

Fix this and you'll be back in the game!  :beerchug:
