How much fuel used to run Rubicon
« on: Aug 05, 2010, 12:14:45 AM »
How much fuel have you guys typically burned thru in running the rubicon? Would be interesting to hear what folks with different drivetrains use up.

It's my first time going and I'm running a 4.3 Vortec in my toy. I have a 12 gallon gas tank. I am thinking I may need to bring some extra fuel.

I usually bring a few gallons extra because I hate the idea of running out of fuel, but I never end up needing it,    :hammerhead:    I usually end up putting it in to lesson the chance of any getting spilled... Ive drove from placerville to loon to the springs, up caddilac, back to loon and back to placerville on one tank before... I might have been running on fumes,,, dunno my gas gauge is not very accurate...

But I can drive from placerville and run the trail one direction and get fuel in tahoe and still have like a half of a tank...  (22RE, 5.29s and 38.5s)

my first gen was running like crap and I ran out of gas left loon to springs back to loon on the slabs is where i ran out.  i would take a 5 gal can just to make sure your good.  Even if your good its nice to have in case of emergencies.  My 89xj 4.0 ran the con loon to cad hill and I didnt have to fill up till tahoe.  I would say it depends on how much time you spend with your motor running and waiting in line and if you have to keep it running to use air or a welder then you might want to bring extra.

It's only about 7 miles from loon to springs.  You should be able to do it easily there and back. FYI- do old sleuce. It's much more fun than the sh1tty slabs.

Depends on when you get up there. There is a gas station on Icehouse but you'll pay probably more than double the normal cost of gas. I'd say bring an extra gas can if possible.

We left the springs at 5:30am made it to Tahoe with 3 gallons in the tank to spare. Doing Cadillac at after just waking up and in the dark was a blast. I am uploading a bunch of pics and putting them up on the round up talk section. Someone started a thread for pics there. They should be up by 8pm. We are in Mammoth now and we are going to wheel up to a near by lake with some Kayaks on top of the truck in the morning. How's Frank's sunburn? He has a mask for Halloween now.

To sum up my experience
12 gallon tank
35" tires
4.88 gears
4.3 vortec with 4L60e in my toy
Started at Loon lake and made it to a gas station in Tahoe with 3 gallons to spare

I stopped my engine when we were backed up on the trail. We did not do any back and forth wheelin from camp. We did go back to soup from camp. Maybe 1/8 mile each way. We did not get behind too much traffic during Rubicon. We did head up Cadillac by our selves at 5am, so we shot up by ourselves without trail traffic.

Epic experience. Next time I will bring some extra gas because you just never know and we could of goofed around more.

Well, I finally added fuel to my 87 22re runner with stock duals, 37's and 5.29's. I used 8 gallons to go from Loon to 1/3 of the way down the slabs into buck, back to little sluice, to the springs then back out Loon. We were not packing light either. Also drove it an additional 10 miles on the street after that.
