I've been trying to figure out why my transfer case pukes fluid out the top of the shifter holes when driving on the freeway. It is fine at low speeds, just when I am running over 3200 rpm's in 5th gear on the highway.
The truck is an '86 mini, 22re, w56, dual ultimate, with 5.29 axle gears and 35" tires.
So far to help fix this leak I have replaced:
Shifters
Transfer Case Rebuild
Transfer Case Housing
Transmission Output Seal
Dual Case Adapter (inchworm to marlin)
and also swapped from 21 spline input 4.7 to 23 spline
The other issue I thought was strange (which spurred the rebuild) was that the pocket bearing on the input shaft was bone dry.
What makes me think it is an over-rpm issue is because I had the 4.7 transfer case in my old 4runner with 4.10 gears and 35's, with no leaks.
So my question: Is there a maximum operating rpm for 4.7 (or 2.28) transfer case gears?
Thanks for the help.
