« on: Feb 03, 2003, 03:44:33 PM »
I've got  an 85 carburated truck and an 85 efi truck I bought for parts. Are the trannys different in each truck and if so which ones better? ??? I already stuck the efi motor in the the other truck but if the efi trannys better I'll swap that too. thanks, dudes.

Yup, Your EFI truck has a W56 and the Carb'ed truck has a G54.

The W56 is hands-down better with stronger bearings and syncros.

I would highly recommend swapping over to the W56.

Got a question. G54 tranny out of 83 4x4 Yota p/u.
How in the world do you remove the shift lever and cover prior to removing the trans? I know it needs to be done but don't know the secret. Could any of you help me out here? Thanks for any help.

on my 83 I took the sift boots off (screws) then you'll be looking at the top of the trans. there is a ball at the top of the housing with the shift lever coming tough it. push the ball down and trun 90 degs and the ball will pop up, then just left it out. hope that helps.  dont ask which way, if it dont go one way just try the other!! you will not have to force it it truns VERY ez.  but you do have to puch it down far enuf. I ues a pair of waterpump pliers for this. just open the jaws a bit  more than the shaft but not as far as the outside di. of the ball and then puch down, not a hard spring at all . but if you feel the need to force it DONT!!! just find someone that can show you how to do it. p.s. a older chev. truck ,or ford come out the same way! good luck!
