85 22RE cranks but won't start
« on: Jun 12, 2010, 11:04:25 PM »
I last drove my 4Runner about 5 months ago.  Ran great, no problems, started everytime.  The rebuild maybe has 3000-4000 miles on it.  Parked it in the garage and haven't started or drove it.  I added an AC compressor for OBA but don't have it hooked up to power or switch (made sure to hook ground back to AC bracket though).  Tryed to get some fab work done today and it wouldn't start  :shaking:

It cranks over but won't fire.  Getting code 11.

Everything appears to be plugged in (never unplugged anything 5 months ago until now). Hooked it up to a battery charger with a 40 amp quick charge to help start it. I also borrowed a friend's 86 4Runner and swapped known good computer, coil, coil wire, and ignitor.  It still didn't start.

*  Computer is hooked up

*  Checked every fuse in the driver's side fuse block, no blown fuses

*  Checked fuses in black plastic box on passenger side of engine.

*  Swapped relay with 86 4Runner

*  Jumpered fuel pump with wire, can hear fuel pump running and fuel around the fuel rail

*  Disconnected battery & removed EFI fuse to reset code, still gets code 11 after cranking

*  Pulled banjo bolt at cold start, fuel came out.  Cranked and lots of fuel came out.

*  Sprayed starting fluid in intake tube, reinstalled & tighted non-cracked intake tubes and no start on the fluid

*  Sprayed starting fluid in intake manifold, no start

*  Made sure I could move AFM with fingers and tried moving it while cranking, no start

*  Pulled one spark plug, looked fine.

*  Hooked up spark plug and held against ground, could see spark while cranked

*  Did the same with the coil wire against a ground, visable spark

*  Battery is at 12.48 volts

*  It cranks over but never fires.  It cranks like something is unhooked.

I don't have an EGR valve anymore or assoicated EGR vaccum hoses (ran fine without it 5 months ago).  I'm pretty much out of ideas.  Never richarded with the TPS or AFM since it ran fine 5 months ago.  Worked on it for 7 hours with my dad with no luck.  I wanted to get a rear bumper built but was richarding with the no start instead :(

I had the same problem with another truck that the PO rebuilt the engine and installed the ground from the block to the frame but grounded it to the motor mount (engine side) instead of the frame side of the motor mount. Take some jumper cables and ground the block to the battery  :crossed:

I was going to say maybe some fresh gas but you mentioned it didn't fire on starting fluid either.

I will check that tonight.  I really hope that's the problem.  That's the only wire I moved when I did my OBA system.  It should have been grounded good enough, basically sandwiched the ground between the bolt & the AC compressor bracket.  I even sanded the bracket.  I also tried moving the ground to the passenger side motor mount and it still didn't work.

maybe flooding?
also, my wires from the igniter to the coil are super brittle, check those out.

You might want to do a voltage drope test on the power and ground side, comperssion test and vaccum.
these test would help you what to look for.

Grounded the block & under the intake to the battery using a jumper cable.  I also pulled all 4 spark plugs (they didn't look bad at all) and squirt a little oil in each cyl.  It tired to fire a couple of times rather than just cranking but still didn't start.

I also tried some starting fluid in the airbox.  That didn't work either.  I bought some new starting fluid, my stuff is a couple of years old.

maybe flooding?

Might have been slightly flooded.  Let it sit overnight and still didn't start.

I swapped the igniter & coil with a known good one and it didn't help.  Those wires do look fragile though!

You might want to do a voltage drope test on the power and ground side, comperssion test and vaccum.
these test would help you what to look for.

That will be my next step, thanks for the advice.

It shouldn't have changed when adding the a/c compressor but check the ignition timing and tps sensor.

Wow! That's weird. If it ran before you put in the AC compressor, then it must be something you did while doing the install. It shouldn't be not starting because of the timing or TPS if was running fine before. Did you remove the plug wires when you did the AC comp. install? Maybe double check the firing order. Check stuff like that. It's got to be something simple.

Check for pinched wires by the A/C unit.

Yeah, it's def an electrical problem if you put fuel in the thing and got no spark.  I'd suspect that maybe the main lead to the distributor got whacked out of place or some wire is bent/damaged near the front of the engine. (also if you say, put the distributor in horribly wrong(180 degrees off - not sure if that's possible on a 22RE, though...) by mistake or got a spark plug wire out of order it can also just not fire up)

I'm going to swap the TPS sensor this weekend with a known good one.  I also plan on checking the ignition timing.

I know, it's really weird.  Nothing was unpluged or taken apart when I installed the AC comp.  That's the part that I completely don't understand.

Check for pinched wires by the A/C unit.

Will do!

It's gotta be electrical.  I'll look at all the wires on the frontend this weekend.

Got it running tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  It was the rotor   ::) ::) ::)   Replaced it with a new one and tried to start it.  It finally tried to fire.  Took a while to get it to fire all the way over but once it did, it ran great.  Took it out for a 15 minute drive, it's good to go.

Thanks for all the help and advice everyone!!

Sweet, I'm glad you got it going. I had a rotor :pokinit: on me when I was driving down the freeway. It took me a while to figure out what the problem was.
