dana heads. Few questions
« on: Jun 06, 2010, 09:59:43 PM »
I got a few questions about some dana axles. I'm thinking of going dana 44 front and rear on my toyota.

For the rear I was offered a dana 44 from a buddy out of a 60 gmc half ton 2wd truck. Will this work for my truck? I know I'm gonna have to have to add some spring perch on it but anything else. Will gears work in it? Is there any difference in the 2 wheel rear end? Its 6 lug so I'm pretty sure it will work.

And for the front I'm thinking of going with a 44 from a chevy/gmc half ton or blazer/jimmy that would be pass side drop right? How would I set up the steering on it? any links to this set up??

I know its probably not the greatest setup but I can't find any toyota front axles close and I'd rather just not deal with breaking birfields.

Any input is thanked.

Will likely be coarse spline = pass

I almost went with a 44 up front on my toyota but I started pricing everything out and it just got really expensive. The steering was a lot and you have to have a certain knuckle then adapting the Standard brakelines to MEtric. IDK, it all adds up.

Plus the toyota axle is deadnuts simple to swap under and depending on how you drive it (DD, trail queen, etc) you wont have as many issues with cops onroad.

Ill try to find the links I had for getting 44 parts.

There's always the wagoneer 44 option.  Not as wide as full widths but not as narrow as stock toy.

Is there a local craigslist?  I see wagoneers super cheap on ours sometimes, almost cheap enough to warrant buying it just for the axles if you were looking to do that.

I'd like to just find a yota axle but every one and their grandma wants one driving the price up to almost the cost of gold per ounce.

You're close enough to Sky manufacturing that it's worth making a run over there and see if he has one or knows anybody with a cheap toy front.

Looks like Sacto CA if you are willing to make a trip.  In my opinion you are better off building Yota axles for strength, Dana 44's are difficult to swap and will probably need to be rebuilt/upgraded as well.

I would run the Toyota stuff. Think about being out on the trail with some buddies, Toyota stuff is easy to come by and it's inexpensive. Dana 44 axles are not that much better than Toyota axles, I would consider it if you were talking from and rear dana 60's but not front and rear dana 44's, just my two cents.

You drop about the same amount of $ into a Dana 44 as you do into a Toyota axle.

Parts Mike is a good source for Dana stuff.

X2..  i built a 44 front axle for one of my old rigs and when all said and done, i had $3400.00 into it. I took  a full size, narrowed it some, moser axles, detroit, and gearing. What are you looking to spend for a toy front end? i have a couple of my buddies, including myself that have some. I know the only down side is that you live far from us. We all live next to the Hammers in SoCal.

You can find them for that kind of price, you just have to want it. I have paid as little as 100 dollars for a complete one. I think the last one I bought I paid 150. It's mostly about being in the right place at the right time and looking hard.
