is there a way to test it before throwing it in the truck, i just got one?

grab the input shaft, try moving it side to side, there should be a little bit of play, but hardly any, and also put the tranny in gear and just spin the shaft.  if there is alot of bearing noise or hard spots where it feels like it's binding up, there's probably something wrong. otherwise, if it spins free and sounds quiet, it should be good.

sweeet!!!!! just did that and all the gears seam fine reverse has a little bit more play than the other gears but seems fine  :greengrin: i tryd to to that when i first got it and it wouldn't spin at all, thats why i thought there was somthing wrong with it. but i just went outside and tryd and spun free

one more question, how do you find out what type of transmission it is? w56-a w56-d. is there a place on it where they badged it?

w56-a is all aluminum, and came only in the 85 22re.  w56-d will have a steel section in the middle of the tranny, usually painted black, and came behind the 92 22re.
