Like many of us on here I too have wondered which tire would be right for me, now that I cant get my MTR's in a 15" rim the decision as to which tire I would run was up in the air. MTR's or Krawler/KM2. Long story shortened. I've riden with and seen first hand both tires. My expience is as follows with guys that are using their rigs in an offroad manner they were built for. The new tread pattern of the Goodyear is more aggressive and does an excellent job of providing straight ahead traction. I'd say it was comparable to the BFG's but still not as good.  HOWEVER...

Competition Krawlers: out of 8 39" BFG's in four years 1 side wall failure.

Competition Goodyear: out of 12 42" MTR's in one year 10 side wall failures.

I'd say the new Kevlar side wall design was just a bunch of poop! I dont like them at all. They still have a crappy side wall just like before, I dont think they are tuffer than the previous. The only good thing I see from their new design is that the new design is a lighter weight tire. I was told the new 42"s were 5lbs lighter than the previous 40".

Can you really compare kralwers and mtrs though?  Wouldnn't you want to compare km2 sidewalls to mtr sidewalls? 

I wish we sold more mud tires at the shop, for no other reasons than to get good feedback and to see what comes in with sidewalls failures.  In 10 months at the shop, I've only seen sidewalls on any tires fail due to being run flat or at too low pressure, or due to age degradation.

37 inch mtr's were around $275 each,  I'd like to find something that compares to that.

Good point, sorry for the confusion, not what I was thinking but oh well. Oh to more important things.

Point is still that the new MTR's are new with the same old problems. Poor side walls.

Im thinking IROK's for off road only, but thats just me, I dont any experience with the others.

I totally agree, but I will not run them because I want a tire that is more dual purpose, which is why I debate MTR vs. BFG. IROK's aren't that good on the street.

Iroks do suck on the street expecally bias. I ran 36x13.5's on a trip once about 500 miles round trip on the free way with speeds up to 70ish. It was not that great and ate about 5% off them. Of course I was locked in the back and did a lil wheelin to.

How about the truxxus MT.  I hear they do well? 37/12.5/15.  I do like my MTRs though, that is why I run them.  My buddy has the krawlers and they wear a lot faster than the MTRs but do hook better.  I would not consider the krawlers a dual purpose tire.

Well, I'd say they were, at least compared to a Swamper or Irok. And we can always substitute a KM2 for a Krawler. The point is out of the three I mentioned above, its the MTR with the worst sidewall. I've personally blown 2 in no time at all, and I'm nice to my stuff.

Your point is taken, and its vallid. But I've known to many people with the old MTR that have torn through side walls in situations that a good off road tire should not be expected to tear. With what MTR's cost I simply expect more, I guess that means I'm going with BFG. All this talk over the last year about how these new MTR's compare to the old ones, well for me, they have better traction with the same old problems that the last version had, poor sidewalls.

I guess I dont understand what people are doing to their MTR's to rip them open so easily.  me and alot of people I know have been running the old style MTR's for years and have never had a sidewall failure, and the rocks in the Black Hills of SD are very sharp granite that moves around alot.

I dont know man, I wheel the hammers and the rubicon for the most part, I dont take the stupid lines, but it happens. Maybe its just the luck of the draw.

A bit past half way through this video you see a Jeep on 40" MTR's (I know because he is a customer of mine) get a flat. In the video it looks like he isn't doing anything other than normal wheelin. In other words nothing extreme.

Hm... and I was pricing the new style MTRs yesterday; I can get the 40s at cost plus 10% through my former place of employment  
My old-style MTRs are from '02 and haven't let me down yet; my buddy had one blow apart on the highway but that may have been caused by the beadlock bolts getting loose/falling out and deflating the tire. We're still not sure what happened and it was a while ago.

I dont know man, I wheel the hammers and the rubicon for the most part, I dont take the stupid lines, but it happens. Maybe its just the luck of the draw.

Man i take the stupid lines all day long and have not tore a sidewall or anything with my 37" MTRs.  HA HA I think they rock(old style anyway). As a matter of fact i was pushing pretty good on the rear against some gnarly sharp rocks and never had a problem this Monday! Same trail last year, same thing but i was into it harder and ya could see the tire pushed away from the wheel. Wasn't even loseing air out the bead yet! I was a bit sceeered that time but they held up! Also ya can see the rock in that vid that did it!  I don't run beedlocks and it looks like that jeep was pretty aired down and the sidewall ran right on the edge of that rock that is there. Its not a big rock but big enough when your aired so low and ya get the weight of the jeep and 5lbs of air the tire tends to fold and not roll. So if it folds on a sharp rock it will tear it. Am i making any sense??? Just my therory cause i run at 12 psi and no lower than 10 psi without beedlocks and they work great!!

I do too, but on a 37", when you get to a bigger tire you need a lower pressure because the volume of air is bigger.

YA makes sense man! Well since we were talking bout this wit the MTR's i was checking things over on the my ride and found a pretty gnarly cut on my sidewall from mondays run. Deep to and like 2 1/2 inches long. im not sure how it didn't go threw but it didn't. So i peeled it back and fillled it wit silicone to keep small rocks and dirt and such out of der. Kinda suck man! I'm not sure wat i got it on but we were in some pretty sharp stuff. We went out for a few hours this evening and ran a trail thats pretty sick when dry and it just rained on us so it really sucked. But the mtrs did alright, they did do there fair share of slipping around. So i guess i'll rock it till it tears out or watever you guys call it. So i need a 37" mtr if anyone has one then i'll make mine a spare. I've been running these mtrs i have for like 5 years or better and have not had a problem till now and its not really a problem its part of krawling and it wat i do all day long man!!

I guess I got bad luck with them then. I like the tread, and the new version has great tread, I mean they grab really well. But we've blown a lot of the new ones which makes my next tire purchase something other than MTR.

Taco~ when you say that you have blown alot of new mtr's, did you blow them all the same way? how did you blow them, Pavement pushing or when out wheeling? did you blow out or ripp the side walls? how many have you blown out already?

sorry for so many questions, Im just trying to get some feed back on the new mtrs since im trying to keep my eyes open for a good offroad tire that doesnt eat away like iroks do on the street..  wish the cash crop would harvest so i could afford 37" BFG Krawlers

Yea same here and since money doesn't grow on trees, looks like I'll have to find another tire that's in my price range.

I Really wish that BFG would lower the prices on the Krawlers... Like thats ever going to happen...
