Tranfercases are popping out of gear...
« on: Dec 13, 2004, 09:26:49 PM »
Hi there, I'm have a question for you all.  I bought my 87 runner from a friend of mine who built it all up.  Shortly after buying it I took a trip down to Moab and had a blast wheeling down there.  A problem that started to occur was my transfercases started to pop out of gear if the load was taken off of them.  This was very annoying when I was trying to climb something and my rig would hop then I'd end up freewheeling backwards off the obsticle.  If you could give me any ideas why they are going into neutral it would be helpful.  The worst part about them coming out of gear was it rolling off my trailer into my 03 Super Duty  in my driveway while I was trying to move the trailer with it on.

Do you have a body lift? Check that the shifter boots are not in a bind.
Has the proper detent spring and ball been installed in the cases? The proper size is .3125 or 5/16".
Do you have broken motor mount{s} that are letting the handles move around?

If all else fails, we sell a heavy duty replacement spring. They can be replaced from the outside of the case with a 6mm allen wrench.
