I run the engine builder 261* crawler cam, not huge notice in power but a little. Id say put one in it, for the price

Are you running that cam?
actually no, the cam i'm running is .460 lift and 290* duration and requires clearancing the pistons to prevent contact with the valves,  the cam i suggested for you is a .440 lift and wont require piston clearancing

How is the LC cam at low rpms?
the cam i suggested idles nice and smooth with just a faint lope,  I always hear people saying "oh no dont get an aggressive cam cause you wont have any low end torque"  :shake:  all 22R/RE's have HUGE amounts of low end torque, what they lack is upper end torque and the cam i suggested fixes that

Alright my next question coyote, i have been looking around at different master engine rebuild kits for the 22re, is there a difference in quality in any of the rebuild kits and is there a site or place you recomend to get the master kit from?

try and get Sealed power pistons and rings, perfect circle are also top notch rings. all in all, Enginbldr has a good master kit for the price.  LCEngineering has good stuff but its :bling:   get your cam from them and header.  DO NOT USE KIETH BLACK PISTONS  they are JUNK  (ask me how i know :(  )

ask for "Rock" gaskets when you order from Enginbldr.

Personally I have a machine shop locally that does all the drag and circle track engines around here.  they can order my parts from whoever i choose and can machine a block like nobody else ive seen.

so if you have a race track near you find out who builds there engines and go there.   dont bore the block over .040, if you do you will have a hard time finding good pistons.

Since break-in on a new cam is different from break-in on a rebuilt engine, you may want to finish breaking in the engine before you install a new cam.

I'd run a mild cam. I have in almost every truck that I have built. It's a small gain but definately noticable.

What about fuel mileage with a cam? Does it get better, worse or about the same??

I haven't notice a loss in mpg. I honestly get right around 20 mpg with 529 gears and a 22re. I just try to keep my engine in the sweet spot.

on pure gas aka ethanol free gas, i get 17 mpg  and can get 85 on the interstate in 5th

on 10% ethanol i get 12 and have to stay in 4th gear to maintain 70

I agree about the LCE cam. My dad runs one and it made a huge difference when added to the LCE head, LCE headers and exhaust he had done. He noticed a big power gain and a mileage gain. Well worth the money.

you know what my question is??? I'll tell you lol, My 22re runs great and can handel high rpms all day long. hence a low compression motor. If I go changing that is gonna still be as trustworthy?? I'd hate the loose the abilty of hold it to the floor and doing the slow 4 wheel crawl up a hill, with the tiers doing 30 mph

That is the one I run in my 22RE. Coupled with the Downey header and flowmaster, my 4runner actually has some pep. My buddy who has owned dozens of 22RE Toyotas said my engine is the most powerful 22RE he personally has ever driven. I'm pleased with it.

To be honest I don't really know. When I bought my 4runner it had a fresh DOA motor in it and all I know are the options he chose when he had it rebuilt. Don't know any specs on the cam itself. My 4runner hauls ass though :gap:

ive owned plenty of 22r's and 22re's and when i added a cam, full exhaust with a header and a k&n to a stock 80k mile motor it smoked all of my other motors, you need to have intake and a larger exhaust to get the most out of your cam

I used the LC degree wheel with a DOA cam and after tuning it a bit I noticed a difference over just the cam...
