« on: Mar 29, 2010, 08:31:00 PM »
well here it is i got a 1981 toyota pickup free from a friend.

as you can see can with no engine or transmission or transfer case.
and so the journey begins.
bobbed it today with some help from my good friend. all i can say is he is my go to toyota guy.

took 10 inches off the back and ii rather like the way it looks.
more updates coming soon.

Chevy springs on a bobbed short bed? Think they are far too long.

You can still run chevy springs in the rear.  Just not the 63"s. The 53" one will work fine or you can use F 150 rear springs.  I started out same way you are and ive learned a ton in the last yr on how to make my rig a better wheeler.  If your going for a trail rig with great flex then dont try and get your lift from the springs.  Chevy rears and rears up front with a drop front hanger and long shackles will get you up high enough to run 37s.  The major downside to 1st gen trucks is the wheel wells are small so tucking ur tires in the front makes it nearly impossible to do with tires bigger then 35"s and even then its gonna rub. So when you do a rears up front(ruf) it will move your front axle forward about 2"s.  If you run a custom front hanger then you can move it even more forward.  I am around 3-3.5"s forward and I put some 37"s on the front and tucked them ok but I was still rubbing on back of front wheel well.  A lot of people cut the fender wells but I love the 1st gen curves to much to hack it up.
Heres a link to my build thread.  I need to update it some more since ive added more to my truck of late.  I just got my yukon 529 gears for the e locker I got a little while back.  Plus I got a dual case setup in trade for some labor I did.  http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=61015.0

Tubbing the fender wells won't really ruin the lines of the truck imo. It's not visible.

dont worry buddy, we will get the chevy's to fit. i ran them on my 79. just have to build a new hanger and shackle mount.  most likely the shackle mount will be on the bumper.  as for rubbing the front firewall... no worries. we will cut it back to the body mount and you will barely touch, even with 37's.

Marlin has a censor, so when it says pregnant dogin, it really means the female dog expletive. :gap:  You can turn the censor off in your profile settings.
