ride height vs. ride quality
« on: Mar 27, 2010, 05:19:55 PM »
As of now I'm in the middle of redoing the lift on my pickup(83 sr5 4" procomp lift). The lift that is on the truck now I wouldn't say rides the best so what I'm tryna figure out is how to make the truck ride the smoothest off road. I'm under the impression that the higher the arch of spring the stiffer the ride.  I'm trying to achieve  5" of life but still want it to be as soft on a gravel road as a stock spring. The idea I came up with is to use one of skys 2" drop hanger with one of marlins 3" spring  in stead of a 5" spring. What would the differences between 2" drop hanger with a 3" spring. Vs just a 5" spring?

I'm no expert with all this but I really would like to learn more any imput would help.

Not sure you'll find to much difference with those heights, but I am sure that as much as springs play a big part of this equation, shocks play as big a part or more, so do your self a favor and shop those at the same time.

I would build a good set of RUF using some stock springs as well as 2 from your pro-crap lift with some good shocks. However, if the 5" of lift is the goal, buy some 4" lift springs and do the 2" drop hanger.   The 2 inch drop hanger only provides 1 inch of lift.

Very true, shocks are a big part of it. I was planning on running 12" 5150 or 5125s bilstiens.

That's a very good idea that had slipped my mind, and thanks for letting me know the drop hanger only lifts 1"

ive driven stock trucks (1st gens) my custom lift using stock springs mixed with 2wd S10 springs and my current 5 inch Allpro springs.
I can tell you that the 5 inch Allpro/Marlin springs ride far better than the stock springs did and about the same as my custom springs did.

choose your shocks wisely  and make sure whatever springs you put on they are a thin leaf, those procomp leaves are probably 3/8 inch thick or thicker

you cant use RUF and still be able to use the stock 83 steering,  to do RUF  you MUST have histeer and he couldnt make a "good set"  of anything from those procomps.

You can also go with a 1" body lift from Roger Brown or Sky as another option.

Yes I would be putting a high steer set up when I do all this. And I'm think ill just sell the pro comp lift to a buddy to help fund the high steer so I can't really be stealing leafs outta it.

This also is a possibility as I wouldn't want to chop up to much of the front crossmember when I put the ifs box in.
Does the anyone know if the 1" body lift help at all in that situation?
