W58 tranny swap
« on: Dec 05, 2004, 08:21:25 PM »
So I'm perusing the local yard lookin for supra limited slips and noticed that they also had W58 trannies.  The wheels started turnin, and seein as I will probably never find a good w56 or r series tranny I started wondering what it would take to swap in one of these.  From some of the other posts I know that the bellhousings are innerchangable, but was wondering if you could take the back off another 4by tranny that will accept a gear drive case, which I already have layin around.  If  I could latch onto the necessary parts cheap enough it should be a fairly inexpensive upgrade since the tranny won't be too expensive,   Nate

The W58 should have a 3.24 ? first gear compared to the 3.95 4wd W56.

This trans would still work as long as you used the 4wd output shaft, rear housing, and shift shaft linkage.

Thanks Marlin,  I'll hafta get a hold of my brother and have him check to see if they offered a lower first gear in any of the years.  I might hafta call on you guys for some much needed knowledge when/if the time comes, and if my friend can't do it for me.   Nate

The 3.95 first gear was only avaiable on one ton 2wd's, turbo diesels, and all 4x4 efi trucks.
2wd trucks got the 3.83, and cars got the 3.24 ratio first gear.

Marlin,  I saw another guy ask you if you would accept rebuildable transmissions as partial payment for a rebuild job or other tranny work, but never saw if you responded.  I'm curious about this too, and was wondering which trannies you would want.  I'm pretty sure there's a g52 or g54 in an 86 truck in a local yard, and could probably dig up a couple other trannies depending on what you want.  If you wanna PM me about this that would be ok.  Thanks,   Nate

Also forgot to ask,  but I'm assuming that depending on the year of the 2wd one ton they used either a w50 or w55?  Would switching out the rr housing, output shaft and linkage still apply to these trannies?  I really appreciate your time and help on this, it really helps to have someone so knowledgable about all this to bounce idears off of,   Nate

I am always looking for trannie cores.
At this time I am not buying the '79-80 L43 4 speeds.
L,G,W,R's, I am still buying them!

Not only do you have to replace the tail housing and shift linkage, but also the output shaft as well, and all these parts must come from a 4x4 trans.
Only turbo diesels 2wd's, and one ton 2wd's had the 3.95 first gear.

Do not buy the 4 speed W46 trans, the countershaft has the 5th gear extension cut off!

Is the price you would pay the same as your core charge?  If not how much would you pay, assuming it is in working condition?   Thanks,   Nate
