Low range gears?
« on: Mar 04, 2010, 09:01:16 AM »
I was thinking of going with dual cases but dont need that much crawl and dont want to spend the money for the second case, gears, drivelines etc....  So I also dont crawl and think that 4.7:1 is a little low for my needs. Didn't marlin used to offer a 4.0:1 low range? Where can I get one now? Ive heard that others have had problems with other manufacturers quality but never a problem with  :turtle:.

Suggestions?  :dunno:

I was planning on using 4.0 and putting it in 3rd or 4th most of the time. I still want a usable reverse since I do a lot in snow.

Marlin used to sell them but did not make them. I think the were made for AA Adapters and were called "Trail Tamer" or something like that. I snow wheel and most of the time I am in my 4.70 case, no problems. The nice thing about dual cases is you still have your stock low and then a lower low.

Hold on and put the dual's in. Its not that much more money and you get so many gear options, you get to use twice the number of gears. Not just 1st and 2nd, instead of 10 gears you have 15. Save the dow and buy duals.

Duals makes for much better driveline angles too. I vote on duals.

I have a single case with 4.7:1 gears and would agree with the above on a couple of points

- reverse is too low most of the time with the 4.7's... I find myself shifting into 4hi a lot to reverse, which is actually too high of gearing

- loss of the stock low range... Forest roads, access roads, etc, it would be nice to have an 'in between' gearing rather than high or real low

- driveshaft angles suck with single case... maybe not so much if you rotate the knuckles or something?

Basically the more gearing options the better. more more MORE!  :usa:

Thanks for the input. I think I will just work on other things until I find what I really need. Best not to rush into these things.

i waited for a year before i bought my setup.  drove/rode in my friends trucks to see what worked best on the trails we run.  most guys just ran 4.7lo with the crawl box in high. dual ultimate is overkill for our terrain.  so im just running two stock cases.  still have my stock low range and double low is 5.2:1...back on the trail in a couple of weeks to test it out...
Im like Hugh Hefner minus everything good about his life.
