22RE wont stay running
« on: Feb 26, 2010, 09:55:33 AM »
Ok, I got a 87 Runner Stock. It will not stay running after a small Fire near the Power Steering pump. I replaced all the stuff the was burned. Plug wires, Plugs, Steering lines, and spliced 3 wires out of the harness that got burned. I only cut and replaced 1 wire at a time, so not to get them mixed up. I have looked at the other wires and harness parts in the area, and all appear fine.  I have replaced Fuel pump, Fuel filter. Pump is pushing 38lbs. I have swapped Maf, TPS,  ECU, and Coil. It starts up for about 1-3 seconds. But wont stay running after that. I have Spark, Air, and fuel to the engine. But cant keep it running. Do any of you have any ideas that I could try? or look at? Any help will be much appreciated at this time.

I'd replace all the wires.  There are times that a wires coating looks good, but the wire inside isn't.

is all the fittings for after that mass air flow sensor tight.  My buddy was having the same problem and it just turned out to be a loose intake fitting.

What goes away after 3 seconds, fuel or ignition? Try jumpering out the fuel pump and see if it stays running.

What about the distributor? Any damage to it? It's in the area you described as burned.

manually open the mass air flow while someone starts it
play with it and the throttle at the same time,

I have tried Jumpering it again, and also having someone hold open the MAF. Neither made a difference.

The first 3 seconds of running are all off of the cold start injector. What do the spark plugs look like? are they dry or wet? is there any chance of water in the fuel? if you can get your hands on a noid light (it plugs in between the injector and the harness and has an led in it that lights if the injector is getting pulse) and test number one injector it will tell you a lot. Can you tell me more about the fire? was the engine running? because the wiring you had to repair is most likely the alternator wiring. if that wiring burned up with the engine running you take a chance on damaging the ECM. Good luck and let me know if I can be of help.

There are 3 wires going from the coil igniter box and runs over the engine and into the engine harness. If any of these wire are damaged it can cause this. cut the sleeve off and inspect all three wires. One of these wires tells the ecu that the engine is getting spark. If the ecu doesn't get this signal it will not fire the injectors. I had this same problem with my 22re and it was one of those 3 wires, it was almost broken in 2. If that's not it then check the wires coming from the afm. If that's a dead end then it might not be fire related. When I replaced my 22re with a built 22rte I changed out the entire harness. I then had the same problem. It wasn't one of those 3 wires. I beat my head against the wall trying to figure it out. for the details check out my newbie thread. In the end I ended up changing out the under the dash harness and the problem was solved. I hope this helps you out. Good luck!
