fj40 disc brake swap
« on: Feb 16, 2010, 02:40:12 PM »
I was wondering if someone could give me a quick synapses of how to convert a 1970 fj front axle to disc?

yes and yes...  later year axles with the same size birfs as the mini trucks..  as well, these will have the big bolt pattern for your knuckles.. once again same as the mini trucks..
the never ending build...

The easiest way is to find a set of used mini truck knuckles, spindles, hubs, locks, baking plates and birfields.  Remove your old birfields from the axles and install the mini truck birfields.  Once your cruiser axle is disassembled use a die grinder and a bur to remove enough material from the inside of the axle ball to allow the assembled axle to turn and spin freely.  Once that's done remove the third member and clean the housing inside and out of shavings.  Reassemble per service manual.  Helps if you have a mini truck manual.  Marlin has all the service parts.  I recommend replacing all the bearings and seals while you're in there.
