That is a total brut force way of doing, but effective. Unless you drive any distance on the road.
If you see it, its for sale.

no a welded front doesn't affect you on the road unless your hubs are locked. and you shouldn't be on dry pavement in 4wd. but ya arb or E locker is the way to go. i have a tru trac and it does pretty well.

Aslong as everything is geared the same 4wd on dry road is fine. Its when they are different, one will need to slip and cause problems.
If you see it, its for sale.

your right..  what i was meaning was that theres really no reason to be on dry roads in 4wd not that it cant be done or shouldnt be done.

I ran a lockrite in my IFS front end from about mid '04-mid'09 with no problems at all.  Didn't have a difficulty steering when offroad, and when driving in the snow on the road, didn't have any trouble either.  It was definitely a great mod that allowed me to keep my IFS a lot longer than most people do when using their trucks predominately offroad.

I'd say go for it

FYI, my setup was 5.29s front and rear, 37 MTRs then 35 BFG MTs, detroit rear, lockrite front, and from '06 or so on, duals.  When I went to my SA, the lockrite was working fine, and traded to a buddy of mine, who used it with no problem.

I have a spool in mine for now... Its not bad with hydro assist but turning on asphalt makes my front end make scary sounds... Its really pry not a good idea to weld/spool the front its super hard on everything. I just did it cuz i broke my Aussie and im fresh outta money.

If you have money for two lunch box lockers, I would suggest buying an ARB for the rear.  Front lockers are nice to have, but not all that necessary.  Most of my buddies that have dual ARB's rarely run the front, but then again most w/selectable lockers tend to only run them when needed anyways.

I prefer having a selectable locker in the front. There are lots of times where a locker only gets in the way. I'll run both diffs open until I start to get stuck. If I can't get thru with the rear ARB, I'll then engage the front, then it's no problem. It's nice to be able to disengage the front as soon as I'm done with the obstacle, so my steering goes back to normal.

You could do a detroit or lincoln locker and a hydro (full/assist), but that is brute strength, and I'd be worried about breaking stuff. I'm all about doing things as gently as possible and with finesse.

I'm welded in the front with all stock steering and axles. It's a pain to turn on asphalt but then you don't ever need to run 4wd on asphalt anyways. I definitely love having a locked front and prefer welded over open, however if I was to buy a locker for the front I would definitely go selectable. I plan on getting one one of these years..

I've got an Aussie in the front. It's awesome offroad but it will definately keep your attention on snow/ice covered roads. If I had to do it again, I would go selectable in the front.  :twocents:

I had a welded front on my old 85, it is nice but a pain in the ass if you like 10 point turns.
