How to ship a transmission on a pallet?
« on: Jan 20, 2010, 08:25:04 PM »
Ok, so I found my trans. and need a cheap way to ship it from Utah to Cali.?
Wasn't sure where this post goes? Who to use for shipping? Don't have access to box for "UPS" shipping.
Know about palletizing but frieght line quoted me $275.00.

As far as UPS or FedEx goes- The weight is gonna be the killer. Drain it REALLY good and wrap it in shrink wrap, then put it in a crate or rubbermaid bin if you can find one big enough. The torque converter is a signifigant part of the weight, you might be better off shipping it separately, also separate the t-case if it's a 4WD unit. 70lbs is usually the point when they charge more for overweight. I have always got better rates from FedEx for big heavy stuff, even more so when I set up an account (doesn't cost anything and only take a few minutes). Hope that helps. You should call Marlin since they ship trannies often, they might have some good pointers.

On another forum I'm on, there's talk of using Greyhound for shipping.........

Don't know all the details, but it's always mentioned as a cheap option.

Thanks, I was gonna call the Marlin shop tomorrow for ideas. Thought I would start here. I forgot about

Greyhound. will investigate that more. Was looking into "Roadway" or "GI trucking" although that was the quote I

got for 275.00. Its a five speed manual. Wonder what it weighs? :hammerhead:

Had a Taco Auto shipped from CO to Cali.  about $110.  Shipped in Two containers, one for the trans, and one for the Torque converter.  The guy used a large rubermaid for the trans,  UPS.  You could remove the bellhousing to make it lighter if you dont need it.

Shipped and received my trans from Marlin in a Rubbermaid tote.  Put a piece of plywood on the bottom so that the plastic didn't get ripped/damaged from the heavy weight.  Pack with styrofoam or blanket so that it isn't flopping around in there.  I shipped it UPS, it was more expensive because of the weight, don't remember the actual cost, but it was reasonable.

I work at a motorcycle salvage yard. We ship engines all over the us via R and L carriers. Dont think your tranny will weigh more than some of the heavier motors we ship. Normally get a quote for around 100.00 to 130.00 just about anywhere. Just have to paletize it using banding straps and wrap with some kind of plastic wrap (clear or black... doesn't matter). I believe a tranny would still be classified as class 85 through them. We tried at one time to ship a frame (which weighs less than a motor, but is classified as 250) and got a quote for like 250.00. Hope this helps.
