Auto trans issues
« on: Jan 06, 2010, 04:46:17 PM »
I have a 87 4runner with v6 and auto trans. The trans is slipping the fluid is black and burnt. I'm going to change the fluid and filter and see what happens. But I'm afraid it might need a rebuild. Anyone have info on rebuilding it or other things I should look at. Thanks for any help.

if you want to attempt the rebuild yourself, the factory service manual details it with pictures....

save your money on the filter and oil change it'll make it worse.  pour some trans-x in it.  i'm not usually the guy that uses a "miracle-in-a-can" but I swear trans-x is just that.  its not a permanent fix obviously but my buddy used it in his slipping tranny for a year and a half.  when it'd start slipping he'd pour a can in and it'd go like new again.

Filter kit and fluid change.  make sure to clear out the cooler lines and flush some cleaner through the cooler too. You can get that special can of cooler cleaner from a trans shop.

I would add to that a quart of trans x.  If it still is slipping it could be the converter gone bad too.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

I'd search on google on doing the filter/fluid change and make your own mind up.  I have always heard that if your tranny is already slipping then don't change the filter/fluid.
