Rear axle bearings
« on: Jan 04, 2010, 05:40:15 PM »
So I finally figured out a vibration problem that I had originally written this off as "larger than stock tires". It was actually my rear's passenger main bearing. Loose as heck and as of late has been dripping gear oil.  :slap:

Question: Should I replace the bearings on both sides? Who should I get these through? What about axle seals? I need this done very soon.  :help:

Well if its leaking oil then yes the seals are bad. When the seals go bad, they wash the grease out of the bearings, so you need to replace them even if they feel ok. Any auto parts store should have them, try to get timken bearings.

And replace both at the same time.

:blah: Yeah, I know Marlin sells all of this but I need my truck done tomorrow, Wednesday by the latest. Marlin won't get this to me in time. Plus, I don't want to dump more money into this axle when I will soon be replacing it. I just can't replace it right now, or I would be.  :dunno:

Stupid questions maybe  :_oops:

i always replace both bearings and seals on anything with over 100,000 miles. if your axle seals are puking you should replace your shoes to, b/c they well be swollen with diff fluid and give you a spongy pedal. and your local Toyota dealer should have them or can get them picked up from another dealer

Then just go to your local parts house and get what you need.  And definitely new shoes.

If oil is dripping down to your tire and oil flung every where your bearing needs replacement, if your shoes are oil soaked and just minor leakage onto the shoes its the inner axle seal....thats from my experience, both happend and 2 different times     :twocents:

I'm trying to be real cheap right now so what about this... I have a completly assembled passenger rear axle with drum. It looks to be in fine shape. What if I replace the seal and throw in my spare axle? Or are there other issues?

If the bearing is in good shape then just replace the seal and throw that one in there.  I wouldn't be afraid to.

It felt like a tire was out of balance. My truck shook at certain speeds.

How do you check your rear wheel bearings to see if they are good or not?

:dunno: My drum moved up and down about 1/4 inch. When I had the axle out, I spun the bearing and it sounded rough.

I think one way to check it without pulling your axle would be to drop off the drum and try to wiggle the axle.

Good question I noticed when I put a new wheel bearing on one of my axles it had a little bit of play in it.  If its not screaming at you I wouldn't worry about it.  Do you think you might have a bad wheel bearing?

Well I was thinking maybe so but I dont get much play in it. I just have a bad vibration at 35 and over, my driveline has some slop in the splines, my bros d-line is much worse and doesnt get that much vibrations from it, Im just try to get arid of the vibe...

That's likely your problem. Not every truck acts the same. Yours might be getting bad vibes from less slop.

After driving for a bit I noticed my vibes are still there. Shoot.
