Actually it was CRUZILLA!!!!! who Killed it. He claimed that he was not used to the clutch  But he only killed it once, it was still idling at the end of that section.

The only plans I've got right now are rather simple: FJ80 Front End, 37" MTRs, On Board Air.
ETA: Summer

Open for $1k? He's out of his mind. I can get one with all the works right now for $1300. I am hoping to find one for ~$900 in the summer.

I figure it this way:

Keep Stock Hilux Axle:
Free     1981 Axle (I already have one)
$635    30 Spline Longfields
$78      1 Pair Vented Rotors
$238    1 Pair of Vented IFS V6 Calipers
$1,299  High Pinion Electric Locking Differential with 5.29s
$119     3" Wide Wheel Spacers
-----
$2,369  For a Very Strong 8" Toy Axle that now has a 61.5" Track Width (with the 3" Spacers)

Or I could get a FJ80 Axle:
$~1300 Complete FJ80 Front End
-- Includes High Pinion Differential
-- Includes Electric Locker
-- Includes Strong FJ80 Oversized Birfelds
-- Includes Vented Rotors
-- Includes Required Calipers
$225    High Pinion 5.29:1 Gear Kit
$149    High Pinion Setup Kit
-----
$1,674 For a Very Strong Toyota 8" Axle with Huge Birfelds and 63.5" Track Width.

Now I am not saying that a FJ80 Birfeld is stronger then the 30-spline Longfield, I have no idea about that, but I know that I have never broke even a factory minitruck birfeld, even with a Triple Crawler and a 3RZ. So I know the FJ80 Axles will be more then strong enough for me.

Benefits of keeping the stock Hilux Front End: Many people carry spare parts for it, such as spare inner and outer axles for instance.

The width comparison is the #1 reason why I am doing this. I MUST get my truck as wide as possible (in the front), but I want to stay 100% Toyota.

Now with the 3" Wheel Spacers on the Hilux Axle, the overwidth becomes +6", from 55.5" to 61.5".

Now granted, a 61.5" Hilux Axle compared to the 63.5" FJ80 front end, 2" of difference (1" on each side) really might not matter so much........
............but the real problem is how the two STEER. Think about it, with a 3" Wheel Spacer, you are moving the Tire 3" farther away from the pivot point of the knuckle. Not only is it harder for all steering components to turn the tire (due to the added fulcrum length) but the tires will actually move forward and rearward as you turn them, instead of simply pivoting in one place, as they would if the pivot point was at the center of the tire.

Also, 3" wheel spacers put more load on the studs and the more importantly, the front axle bearings.

So inexpensive the FJ80 Axle is not. But compared to the upgrades needed for the Hilux axle to be comparable, it is only $1,674 (FJ80) $2,369 (Hilux).

FJ80 all the way!!!

mike, what about a reliable steering set up? from what i've read the high steer's avalible for the fj 80 seem to be a little lacking.

and fwiw i would (and did) go diamond front with long's 30's and i'll have the 3" on either side :moon:

That is the ONLY problem. The FJ80 uses a two bolt upper knuckle cap, so I will get an axle that came with ABS for an added bolt hole. Also FIREBALL has a nice HySteer setup where he welded on an additional bracket with two more mounting points. I plan to link the lower (Factory) steering arm up to my HySteer Arm. I am not too worried about it. It will be built and built right and I will never need to worry about it.

It's gonna take me about a month to save up for it though, so I won't get it until sometime in July (I dont start working full time until Summer break). But that will still give me two whole months before the Round Up

Thanks,

Big Mike, you were mentioning the difference in strength between the birf's on the mini and the birf's on an 80. I rebuilt my sister in law's FJ80 front axle and when pulling the knuckles off, I said to myself, "Holy Crap! I can fit my head in here!" In comparison, the 80 knuckles and birfs are HUGE. I don't think you'll have any problems with breakage if you keep the driving under control.
In Progress: 3RZ-FE Swap Underway.

Currently: 87' 4Runner - SAS - 5.29's - welded rear - Dual 2.28 cases - Optima bluetop - round headlight conversion - FZJ80 grill - rattlecan paint job - trimmed fenders - Ranger hybrid springs front - Tacoma hybrid springs rear - schedule 160 drivelines 8" slip front - Marlin's crossmember - disk brake conversion

Big Mike....in the last pic, can you tell me how high is the suspension lift you have fitted and what size tyres you are running?

just doing some researching for my next project (84 hilux) and want to compare what you have with whats available.

Is your suspension one of the Marlin Kits thats for sale online?

Thanks.
