1982 22r mechanical fuel pump question??
« on: Dec 22, 2009, 04:28:57 PM »
My after market performance engine has a weber 32/36 coversion on it. I am replacing the fuel pump and I noticed the return line is plugged/capped off. I took the cap off and put a hose on it and put it in a jar. Lots of fuel came out. When I put the new fuel pump on I am concerned about capping it again and am wondering if I should run a return line back to the tank. I am wondering if my fuel starvation when pulling long steep grades at full throttle may be related to the diaphragm not being able to flex fully due to the back pressure of having the return port capped of.

Any thoughts on this??
thanks

I find it interesting that of the 35 or 40 carburated cars I have had over my life time, None of them had needed nor had a return line to the tank. And now this one has to have one. Very strange

I know this is an old thread but if you are still around what did you end up doing.  I was just curious if it is really nesscary to have that return line.  Why do so many carbed viechles not have them and toyotas do?

I ran a return line and the fuel pump seemed to like it better
