Can you replace the crush sleeve with a solid spacer without removing the third member?

Thanks

No, Your going to need to shim the spacer, and recheck your pattern, pinion depth :twocents:

are you sure? the spacer takes the place of the crush sleave... you dont remove the shims from infront of the pinion bearing....

yeah but you have to get the pinion pre-load set right which requires spinning which won't happen with the 3rd in place.  The way you adjust it on a solid spacer is with shims.

yea i got all that, what theay are talkin about is settin pinion depth, installing a solid spacer will not change PD,  you still have to remove the 3rd to set the pre-load, but if the gear set was set up right before the depth wont change if you just swap the in the spacer

I agree pinion depth will def not change.  You technically could change out the crush sleeve with a solid one without pullin the 3rd, but it's risky.

If you do it I'd at least pull the axles out so you can spin the pinion flange after you get the spacer in there to at least make sure its not WAY tight also make sure there is no side to side up/down movement of the pinion.  good luck

i agee the 3rd needs to come out, if not you will not know if the pinion bearing have the right load on them or not, too loose and it will vibrate, to tight and you burn them up, if its worth doing its worth doing right :)

I've done many a race car rearends without ever checking pinion pre-load without a single failure.  granted they run 20 laps at a time not like a DD.  Well I say I didn't check it. I didn't check it with a torque wrench but I spun it and tightened until it felt "good".

pulling the 3rd is required. the only way to get the crush sleeve off and to put the solid spacer on is to take the carrier out of the housing and then press out the pinion. once the pinion is out, you can then slip off the crush sleeve and slide on the spacer. before continuing, i'd check the bearing/races to see if they need replacing. you will have to add shims on top of the spacer to set preload. setting pinion preload can take a few tries if you want it to be perfect. probably gonna wanna torque it to about 6 in/lbs. setting pinion preload will not affect pinion depth as previously stated, therefore, reinstallation of the pinion is fairly easy. when reinstalling the carrier, you will have to reset backlash. i think somewhere between .006" - .010" is ideal. once backlash is set, it wouldn't be a bad idea to recheck your pattern to make sure you're still good. torque everything to spec, reinstall 3rd, and you're done. sorry for the somewhat lengthy explanation. hope its understandable and it helps.

is there a reason as to why you want to swap it out?

then in that case i wouldnt hassle with it. its not worth the work unless you think its really necessary. here's some good info about crush sleeves and spacers that might help.
