school me on tractor paint
« on: Dec 13, 2009, 01:12:21 PM »
I am looking to paint my truck this summer since i messed up the paint pretty good on it. I want something that when i scrap it and scratch it i can repaint easy and quick. My friend told me about tractor paint that he rolled on a few coats and then put a clear coat over it and let me tell you it looked great.

I was also told about some paint hardener that would make it look and go on much better.

Who here has done tractor paint?

Any pictures?

Tips and advice when doing it?

What brand did you use?

I have a single car garage i am planning on doing it in and i really want to roll it on since i have no spray tools.

I really want a dark hunter green, or a Brown color......

The hardener would probably be a catalyst, but I don't know how well that would work when rolling.  It's been quite a while since I've dealt with it, but it seems like it may make the paint kick quicker, so if you're not rolling quick enough it may start to harden the roller and paint.  I think you'll be happier with the finished product if you sprayed it, just have to apply more coats

Hey, do you have details on your 3.8 buick install, namely the efi setup or conversion?

brightside interlux works damn good... brushed or sprayed.... if you brush it make sure you use a good brush and fallow it up with a foam brush for any runs/high spots, be ready for multiple coats also. pretty simple actually...  but i will never paint a suburban with it again lol....

Rattle can primer is stupidly simple, and as long as you stick with the same manufacturer, it'll always look the same.

I'm just kidding

Except primer won't seal and you'll be forever chasing rust!

You couldn't pay me to do the interlux roll on paint.  I've seen so many people say they'll never spray a rig again after using it, but the way they describe having to do it, it just seems so labor intensive  :thud:  I'll take a spray gun any day, it'd just be easier if my compressor was never stolen  :_oops:

I plan on painting my 4Runner with tractor paint sometime this winter.  I plan on spraying mine rather than rolling it on.  If you have the tools to spray it (compressor, gun), I'd suggest going that direction.  Rolling it seems like it's labor intensive.

Here's a thread with some pics of a truck that was sprayed with orange tractor paint.  Turned out nice!  That's the exact color I'm looking to plan my rig.

That's my wife's truck. Implement paint is pretty easy to use. It's a single stage oil-based paint. You do need to add the hardener, because this paint took 6 weeks to dry enough to wet sand without it. I didn't use the hardener. This was my first time painting a truck, and am real happy with the results. As with all paint jobs, prep work is everything. I put around six coats on. One good thing about this paint is that it's available in spray cans for future touch-ups.
Good luck
