1981 toyota pickup 4wd not engaging??
« on: Dec 11, 2009, 12:22:54 PM »
It's a sad sad day for me because my 4 wheel drive won't engage in my 1981 toyota pickup  :( . So here is what could have caused the problem. Back a few months ago, I put new rotors and pads on the front axel. But, when i put the hubs back on and everything back together the passenger side hub stayed locked. It stayed locked because the springs and the actually locking part don't stay together anymore. shoulda tack welded it so that they would stay together but we didn't. So I have been driving for 2 months or so with one front hub locked and the other free. I was told it didn't matter because they are free spinning hubs or whatever. But that's my dad telling me this when I probably know more about my yota than he does... So I don't know if that could have caused my front axel to burn up or not, or maybe that has no effect on it at all. I don't know. But I haven't heard any noises or anything and it still drives the same. Do I have to rebuild my front axel, or what other thing could be causing my 4wd not to engage? I can put in in 4wd I don't think it's in the transfer case because It clicks when I put it into 4wd and the light comes on etc. just the front two wheels don't spin at all... they just roll like they do it 2wd. What should I do?

I am still a new to all this but I think you installed the pawl on the hub backwards... remove the hub and check it out... there is a right way and a wrong way to put them together... make sure it will lock and unlock before you re-install it... should solve your problem...

again, I am a newb so I could very well be wrong...

here are the FSM directions for installation

yes, you installed the lockout incorrectly

um,  you need to lock BOTH hubs for the 4wd to work

If one of your hubs was locked for 2 months you would have noticed extra noise when driving.

Yeah i figured that both hubs had to be locked. and I agree It would have made a loud noise if it was locked. I pulled the hubs apart and put them back together making sure that they could both lock and be free. everything is back together am going to go check to see if it engages now will get back to you guys and let you know if it's fixed
