Rare at best, I have seen only one 86 factory diesel and it was 2wd, and the guy wanted $8,500 for it and it sold in less than a week.

I have a factory 85 Diesel truck in my front yard, it has a 7MGE in it.  They arn't that rare, but are great for Cali swaps.  Its not for sale, but the next big project.

yeah, I saw that one on the L.A. Craigslist.  It looks sweet, but not for that price!  What about starting of with a 2wd one?

man I would totally love a diesel yota, and when the motor finally craps out (if ever) Id either slap in a Cummins ISB 200 or a cat C7 with the firetruck hop up kit for gobs of power. Yeeeeaaaahhh  :yesnod:

I keep looking for one that someone has stuck a VW TDI engine in/done all of the hard work already. (hey, why not save me some busted knuckles if I have the money?)

Either that or one with the 2.7 swap already done.

studentwheeler

The Canadian ad says he gets 35 mpgs!!!! wow is that typical with those little diesel engines?? If so, thats awesome and makes my 22re seem pretty obsolete. Can you bring one of those to Cali without any problems?

Plekto

That's the problem.  CA won't allow it unless it was sold in the U.S. that year, or is a swap for a newer engine, and yada yada yada...  (pages and pages of BS rules and junk - welcome to California!)

It's why swapping a small VW TDI in is a more reasonable option.  Those do run and feel like a 22RE in use(some but not a ton of power) and get about 30mpg combined.

A typical build thread on this.  I just don't want to spend the time and brainpower figuring it all out.

I sooold my 2wd for over $5000 on ebay, the 2lt is gutless!

Plekto

The problem, though, is that you can't swap an older engine into a newer vehicle in pretty much all of the U.S. and have it be street-legal.

my neighbor has a 82 or 83 2wd diesel. he says it is super wimpy with only like 60 hp.

True, but I didn't know if he was up for all that work.

Dang.  If it was even $4K I'd buy it.  But $9K is silly.
