I just got this, part of an email from work.

"Starting November 1, 2009, a new law requires that California Personal Income Tax withholding rates be increased 10 percent. This will impact all withholding categories (Single, Married and Head of Household)."

They're trying to get money NOW.....

Then give you a bigger refund in April....

Just increase your exemptions to compensate.   (they're counting on the stupidity of most people to NOT do that).

When I wasn't self-employeed, I was pretty good at varying the exemptions so that I was within +- $25 of the taxes owed in April..............

Said it before I could, at least in this thread.  Arnie's a left winger who signed up for the right, he just didn't initially have the balls to do the things he wanted to, kinda had to ease into it the later it got in his career.

It means my taxes will increase to over 30%  :dunno:
They will not withhold an additional 10% of your total pay....  the amount of state tax withheld will increase 10%. And fwiw, it's a loan to the state.... you will be repaid when you file taxes next spring. If you will get a refund, it will be larger -- if you have to pay, you'll pay less.

Then I want to get the interest I would have earned on that money by putting it in a CD or something. It's basically a interest free loan to the state in order for them to "balance" the budget. It's a bunch of smoke and mirrors. I'm sick of this stupid state and their idiotic ways.

and FYI, the legislators are predominantly democrats, and they are the fools who came up with this scheme and a few other accounting book cooking ideas to try and balance the budget. Arnold (and I'm certainly not defending him here by any stretch) just signed the only thing that was presented to him that prevented him from loosing face. Problem is that it just shifts fake money around so that it looks balanced. Just wait until the next fiscal disaster waiting over the horizon.

That's definately less of a shock, but still messed up.  I see this as being along the lines of when sales tax went up in what, the early 90s or earlier?  It was supposed to be temporary and would go back down, but then we got used to it and it stayed...  then went up again, etc.  We won't be in a good place in a few months either, but they'll have been taking more money from us anyway and will reason that we were fine for those months, so why not keep going?

If Arney had any backbone at all he'd politely tell them to shove their proposals up their asses and come back with something that'll actually work long term.  There isn't a short term fix to a long term situation.

Yes but California already gave IOU's to taxpayers in leu of a refund last year and banks are refusing to cash them out.

I remember hearing about that -- but I thought only a few banks (temporarily) refused them....   :dunno:

Haven't all those IOUs have long since been paid off by the state?   :headscratch:

At any rate, it's a small bandaid for a gaping wound.

So to compensate for spending more money, we are raising taxes.  :screwy:

Isn't that called Self-Mutilation.

Isn't that what we are doing. Raise taxes to help fix stuff and to compensate for spending more, they simply charge us more. Last I checked I didn't get to just tell my employer he has to pay me more because my spending went up. This makes me  :reg:

Unfortunately it's not as simple as just spending more... the crappy economy means fewer people working (and fewer decent paying jobs), so there's also less money coming in. It all adds up to a downward spiral that has become a tough nut to crack. The economy has to improve before the employment picture can improve... before the taxes coming in can cover the tax expenditures going out.

Hell, if it were an easy fix, we'd have kids doing it... and they'd be done by now.   :gap:

Ya but something tells me it's not as hard to make good/better desicions as they make it out to be. To me it sounds as easy as, "what do I do today, raise taxes or not. Increase spending or not"

4XFlyin

The messed up part is that the media needs to do a better part of spelling out who exactly enacted this and what got Ca to this point. Though I think Arnie should have done a much better job, we have to remember he is flying around with a bunch of turkies. California's problems stem from liberal policies enacted by all the liberal people in offices. We have way too many programs that are iniciated by the left that drain Ca of it's resources. Business' leave California due to liberal policies. When those business' leave than tax revenues go down dramatically.

The places we would like to go 4 wheelin are being shut down by the left. When it comes time to re-elect every single person in Ca we need to consider replacing them with someone more towards the right. Of course too far right is a big beeotch also.

If you watch the regular media like ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, you need to start watching FOX as thay don't candy coat and they tell you how and who is really messing us up.
