front top shift case pops out of gear
« on: Oct 20, 2009, 06:18:20 AM »
:headscratch: i have a first gen 83 pick up, i ended putting duel cases in wih a g52 trans. and top shift case that was on the trans and my original top shift 83 case in back. the problem i have been having is that the top shift case or front case pops out of double low, only when going down hill. i have tried putting in the heavy duty detent spring into the front case. it made the shifter feel alot tighter but it still pops out. what else should i try. and would one of marlins heavy duty shifter bushing for the top shift help this ???  :hammer:

you didnt cut you shift rail as short as it needs to be.. i had the same problem... you have to pull your cases apart and grind it down a little more and it wont happen anymore..

cool lets me know... you can grab your shifter and put it in low range (when the cases are apart) and then you have a little more play in it push the shifter to were it will not move anymore and grind it flush with the case... make sure you dont grind the case though or there will be a chance of it leaking... good luck and post some pics!!!

It actually does affect it more so then two top shifts for some reason the rails have a higher chance to hit. I may be wrong but all top shifts I have done work with a little bumping but mine I had to cut about a half inch off. If you looked at the picture Halladay posted it shows where and which rails he cut. You odviously dont have to cut the rail going into the adaptor because it goes to no where. You need to cut the rail that sticks out of the crawl box going into the adaptor because it hits the 4wd rail on the rear case. I may have just said taht wrong but thats the on you'll want to cut. Just be carefull not to cut it past the marks for the detent ball, I left about a quarter or more of an inch after before the cut. I think I also cut the other rails  so they didnt stick out of the case at all when shifted it just seemed like a good idea lol.

Bahah i didnt like how I worded that. For simple folk talk the crawl box shift rail hits one of the rails on the rear case which allows it to pop out or not want to go into a gear. You can avoid this by shifting in a certain pattern but they tend to want to pop out. If you just cut which ever shifter sticks out furtherst or both then it will keep them from hitting and should solve the problem. If not I have no clue why it would do it but I would check if the shift for and all the junk is in correct order because mines flatt bellied and makes horrific sounds like it wants to pop out but never does.

um, you said G52 to top shift and top shift :headscratch:

G52 should have a forward shift tcase behind it,  unless you blocked off the rear shift hole on the G52

G52 to forward shift crawl box, then a topshift case in the rear

the heavy duty bushing helped out for a little while but not anymore
so me and a buddy finally pulled the cases apart to install my 4.7 gears i got with my income tax return. well there was a bearing in the back of the case that fell apart in pieces  :yikes: . oh well i just had o go home and get some spare parts from when we put the dual cases in. the next day we get started finish the 4.7's then get started on top shift conversion on the front case, and to are surprise the pilot bearing that goes on the input for the abdapter wasn't there  :smack:  :_oops2:. so i go back to my house to look the spare parts there it is. time to put back together now.

so i have been driving it around for 2 weeks or so trying to finish the break in period on the 5.29's we did the weekend before.  haven't gone wheeling yet to try it out yet :soapbox:
someone asked for pictures awhile ago so here are a few
