is it necessary to use a gasket when you use one of these on your modified housing or can you just use some ultra black silicone with no gasket like you do on your normal third. It seems like peope make it sound like its a big deal to get that gasket

you need the gasket to know where to cut the housing

No gasket is needed.  Use grey silicon.
