I'm just curious, if I ever wanted to drive in 3wd (such as snow) would I just be able to lock one hub and accomplish that? Snow season is coming and I know life ain't fun with a front fulltime locker!  :beerchug:

Yup it can be done.  Its the same as having one tire in the air, it will put more stress on the locker but it should be fine.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

BLACKDOG

how well does that lockright wiork anyway??  I am looking at replacing my broken spiders with one, and I want some outside opinions.  They are cheaper than 5.29 gears, and it is easier to install, but i wanted to know how well they worked

Mine broke the pins inside the locker.  I heard that they usually only last a couple trips then they break the pins.  Mine was broken when i installed my third member.  i drove it a lot and couldn't figure out what that popping sound was, and the truck jerked every time it popped.  I finally took it out and replaced it with spiders.

Reynolds

Was that in the rear, Hyena? I'm looking to do this for the front, we'll see how it works...I'm assuming I'll hear it ratcheting much more than I already do (pretty much never)

derek

lockrights are pretty tough.
i ran my e-z locker (same design) for about 6 years before i broke it.
it survived 2 rear axles, 3 front inner axles and 4 birfs before it died.
if you only lock 1 hub it will pull hard to that side whenever you hit the gas.
i couldnt stand the way it handled in snow with only 1 hub locked so i always just ran them both locked in the snow.
it will be tougher to steer and your turning radius will suffer.

derek

BLACKDOG

derek, you have been pretty happy with yours??  Hyena, was that it the front or the back?? I already have a detroit in the back, and havew been happy with that.  If all i am going to lose is some steering radius and have a little difficulty, i might go ahead and do it.  I really dont do any hardcore 'wheelin right now, cause this is my only vehicle.  Its mostly snow runs, camping, and hitting some moderate trails.  Would the lock right work well for this type of wheelin?  Basically it comes down to money, I want to get my 4wheel up and running with as little cash as possible as soon as possible.  in the future I will be doing an SAS so the lock right will go the way of the dodo bird at that time, this is basicaly a temporary fix

Also Derek, How big of tires were ou running?? You too Hyena??

I second the "they are tough"

I ran em front and rear for a long time, then I thought mine was bad so I went to a detroit. Really it was just that I had such mucky oil filled with water that it didn't lock up. I actually sold it and the guy is probaby still using it. When I swapped from toy axles to dana I put a lock right up front. I haven't broken a thing and I never unlock "one hub" either.

I don't get why "they are cheaper than gears" is relavent though - unless your talking SPIDER gears..

You still need gears ;)

you'll need that cross pin with a lock right too - which I hear is one of the weak links so buying a lock right won't help ya.

Hyena

I ran it in the front with 35's.  stock birfs and axle shafts.

DontStall Rockcrwl

ohhhh man io had a bad experience witch driving with one hub locked. on the way to the rubicon i blew a rear driveline at 75mph pogosticking my rear end in the air a foot and a half. so i had to go from georgetown to the rubicon in front wheel drive with one hub locked becuase its not good for those ratcheting lockers to go over like 25 mph and turning. everytime i shifted hears or let off the gas it would jerk to the right and almost make me drive off those damn cliffs. some people said my truck looked like a rc car how it would jerk to the right so hard. just my .02 i dont recomennd driving in the snow with one hub locked. expecially if your locked in rear also
You have all gotta be jealous how close i live to the 'Con

Hyena

I remember driving from the con to Robb's with bearly a clutch.  Had to get pushed up the steep hills.  Anyway.  Do you think it wouldh ave been better to drive it with both hubs locked?  Would it still jerk like that?

Shamb

I have a lockright in the front and it working awesome.

phlatbed

i have lock rights front and rear, i am extreamly happy with them

DontStall Rockcrwl

they say going over 25-30 with the front hubs locked and the quicklock up front, they could blow the F*ck up. Such as going around a turn like 45, and  your locker decides to kick in, who knows what would happen.

From reading on this thread...

I want to put a lockrite in the rear of my 81 with 38's but i want to know if it would last on the road cause it i drive it on road and to the snow/local weelin spot alot so i need something to last. I know a couple people with them and they are pretty beefy, also from what ive read they are beefy. Is this good or will it end up in disaster. And remember now i have a tired 210k mile 22r so i wouldnt be powerbraking it or anything....

Thanks
RIP Kyota.... you are the man

GET IT!!!

Shamb

i dont see why it wouldnt last, it'll just be like any other auto locker. You'll squell the tires backing up and wear 'em out faster but other then that it'll work great. I have 285k on my 22r and it is weak as well, works great.

Hyena

There are four pins inside the locker that move from side to side to lock it and unlock it, i had 3 broken in mine and it wouldn't just unlock, it was like popping a birf extremely loud but it was the locker.  I still had the front locked when i wanted it locked but it would unlock like crazy.  I also have about 275k on my truck, no power either even with 5.29's.

derek

it will work fine in the rear. but will probably drive you crazy.
they like to click and bang. sometimes they will unload and make you think you blew up the rear end as it sends you a little sideways. :shocking:
scared the hell out of me the first time mine unloaded when it was in the rear.
but eventually you get used to it and have adjusted your driving style without even realizing. :gap:
