parts degreaser
« on: Sep 30, 2009, 02:03:42 PM »
I know what I used for a degreaser when I worked at the dealer, but what is a good setup for degreasing parts at home?  I know I could buy a ton of berryman's, but I am wanting to use some sort of degreaser that is biodegradable if possible and a whole lot cheaper.  I have my whole front axle apart and need to clean up the parts before I rebuild it.

So what solution do you have for cleaning parts?

Is this safe to do with birfs, bearings and steering knuckles?  I'm worried about rust on all those bare metal surfaces.  I know I can blow them out with my air compressor, but water seems to always get trapped somewhere.

I plan on knocking the seals out of it and blast it real good with brake cleaner until the fluid running out is clear.  I've done too much to it to risk it rusting from the inside out.

I don't need to wire wheel the housing.  I just got done modding hit for a e-locker and added some bracing, so the outside needs paint.  The inside of it is filthy however.

I just picked up a big jug of the purple stuff and a big plastic bin last night from Wally World.  I'll let you know how my parts turned out.

Does anyone know how the name brand purple stuff is versus the autozone cheapie? Like "Super Clean" vs. "Purple Power"? I just went through a gallon of the purple power and I thought it worked pretty good, I wouldn't say it was spray on and pressure wash though, I did a LOT of scrubbing. And it seemed like it did not work when I tried diluting it with water, I had to spray it full strength. Just wondering because it's time to buy more, wondering if the name brand stuff is worth it.

I buy purple power by the 2 1/2 gallon jugs at schucks.  I use it full strength in my parts washer too.  Works just as good as superclean for half the money.

If it's thick and built up you'll have to scrape and scrub anyway, especially if it's old and baked on.  I've used a steam cleaner and super clean and still had to scrape crap off.

wouldnt rust inside of a oilly housing kinda be like a snowball in hell?

im not saying soak it in water in a barrel 4 a year and a half, just degrease it and let it dry paint the outside and and put it together

but if your worried about it try diesel fuel  it works

Oven cleaner does work awesome (it will remove anodizing from aluminum!) but I have to warn that if you use it on aluminum it can discolor/turn the alloy black if you leave it on too long. The purple stuff will also discolor alloy but not nearly as fast as the oven cleaner.

I agree with 86rustbucket, get it all clean and then paint the axle.  Then just spray the inside with WD-40.

I use some degreaser that my company threw out, called Orange Magic.  The thing with Orange Magic and Purple Power is it's easy on the hands.

I run simple green in my parts washer. You can buy it by the gallon at ace hardware for cheap. It works well and it is also easy on the hands.
