The day was beautiful, and we got out and went for a drive.  Got some nice pics, but the sun was soo bright, I had some difficulty taking some pics.

Pic of a Daffodil in my yard

Some moss on a branch

Was playing with shutter speed

I wasn't really happy with how they turned out, but the day was too bright, and this was the first time I played with the shutter speed.

What ones better?

This one, if you crop the bottom up to just above the yellowish "leaves" if you will, at the base of the plant.

It could use some slight color editing too but other than that it's a good photo :)

Cheese, did you use the same shutter speed with all four water photos? If not, I personally like the first water photo's shutter speed setting the best.

And I like the fourth water photo's composition the best.

Sway, I agree with 1972TLC. I think #2 has more potential. Sorry, I like messing with peoples pictures so I messed with yours.  :disturbed:

Cheesemaker, I love your 4th river shot. And I like the moss shot but I think you could open the depth of field a bit more, get more of the moss in focus. :dunno:

me and my wife are looking to get our first dslr.... i went to the camera store today and talked to the guy in there, he suggested a d3000 or a d5000... we personally like the d5000 for the video option and the swivel view finder ..... my friend who is sort of into photography said get a 2nd lens with it. The guy at the store suggestest a 200mm nikon package deal lens.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some extra advice...

We do a lot of outdoor shooting, wildlife, offroading, animals, etc.

I am totally green to all this and want a HUGE upgrade from my point and :pokinit:....

any advice would be great!

What kit lens does it come with?
I would get a 70-300 macro AF lens for a second, assuming the kit lens is somewhere between 18-90 or 18-135

Jakesteads

the one he suggested was the 55-200mm af-s dx vr

i dont fully understand the MM concept or the megapixel ... maybe you could explain that to me so i can understand better.

sorry it comes with a 55mm lense

Mm is your range; 8mm is wide angle, 1200mm is super zoom.

When shooting handheld make sure your shutter speed is equal to or greater than your zoom.

Go for the 300 if you can.

Jakesteads

ok great that explains it a lot better... i take quite a few distance shots ... so that helps a ton.... next week they are suppose to run "deals" so i want to gather as much info as i can before i drop a ton of money on it

If you can afford it get the IS (image stabilation) lens.

Jakesteads

ya that was mentioned takes the "human shake" out of the photo?

Sway, #2 with an upper left crop.

You guys are getting really good!

Here is a shot from a beauty pageant we shot last weekend. Very low light, changing light conditions. My favorite combo.

No I did not use the same shutter speed on all of them.  I had to adjust it, cause the sun was high and bright, and it was really difficult for me to get what I got without it being all washed out.  And I haven't gotten any filters yet.  As a matter of fact I just priced some from B&H Photo.  :yikes:  Maybe next month.

Jakesteads, I'd go with the D3000.  I know a few friends that have the D5000 and have had issues with the swivel screen.  And to be honest, if you want to take video, buy a digital camcorder.  And when you get the new camera, get a spare battery too.

Hope you don't mind...
Nope, kinda thought you might have done a black an white with that one.

Went to the Zoo yesterday and the wife yelled at me for taking pictures that didn't contain animals or our kids.

Of course the lighting was perfect and I grabbed the wrong lens for getting great animal shots.  But I really hate changing lenses for this shot and then change back for that shot.  One day I'll have a good multi lens.  I really like the 18-270mm range of lenses.
