Few from the car show. Critique please.

Others may care for them but I personally think you went too far with the blur on the 1st and 3rd shots.

The first barely even has a focal point because the only thing in focus is part of an emblem that I can't even figure out what it is.. :(

The third is better, sort of. If the shot had been taken at a different angle to the car so that you could actually see part of the car, then having only few (or one in this case) of the letters in the emblem being in focus would not take away from the photo.

There just isn't much to look at in these two particular photos. Without a stimulating point of focus, extreme blur can fall into the category of "dead space." :/

All the others look fab though, even with all the obligatory reflections lol :)

Nice shots Simp

Yeah, 1 & 3 the DOF was set to 1.8 and my angle was way too much. I couldn't see it until it was OOC. I felt the same as you so I asked a couple of people and they both liked them, so I kept them in.

I have found that any photo is a great photo, if you have the right person looking at it.

To a car nut, they look cool.  Cause we know what they are, but the pictures gives us a different perspective on things we've seen a thousand times.

On a side note, a little more depth of field, just a little.  But I love the OOF to the right of the pictures, cause you know what the car looks like, but leaves you wanting more to see.  I think you did fine Kyle, but everybody likes different things.  A classic car nut would love those pics.

1. I would like the top 1/3 of the photo to be sky, horizon line is crooked.
2. Again, more sky, crooked horizon, over saturated
3. Nice shot, but using a flash turned down 1/2 stop might have brought more detail to the flowers
4. crooked horizon, not sure about the subject
5. Survey markers are cool, there is actually a site dedicated to finding and marking the GPS of all of them. Shot needs to be rotated 2* CCW and it's slightly out of focus, if you could darken the shadows a bit also that would be good.
6. I do like the shot, but I would like to see the flower in focus instead of the stem

Even to newb car nuts they are good photos....but because of the newb status someone like myself might not know what the car in the first photo, is. Everything in that photo (minus the enormous glare circles) is great, but as you mentioned, the DOF could be adjusted just a bit, so that maybe the emblem/badge, whatever it is would be slightly more in focus. And perhaps at just an ever so slightly different angle so that you could see the shape. For me, while I like the blur and the color and lighting an all, it just looks like a sweet ass old car with 3 silver blobs glued to it. lol :(

The Bel Air shot is growing on me though now that I look at it on a new day. :)

1. Beautiful. I'm not a fan really of crisp "in focus" if you will haha glare cirlces. And in this particular photo they actually don't look all that natural. They almost look like you took a glare circles brush to the right side of the photo in PS or something. lol Other than that though I love it.

2. Love the emblem and the contrast of the emblem colors is just great. As for the rest of the photo, I'm very torn. Part of me says "it's kinda boring" but the other part of me says "boring or not the main focus is dazzeling." The shadow at the top of the photo though is just kind of throwing it off for me. It's a bit distracting. And the shot I guess is more flat, than boring. It's flat, there's no depth. I know you didn't but it kinda looks like you took a photo of a vette emblem hung on a white wall, with weird glare/reflections. :/

3. Outstanding! Perfect everything. :) Even perfect reflections as they barely look like relfections! :)

4. Poster material. Looks like the kind of shot the dealer would be making banners with and advertisement billboards and posters. :) Very nice shot.

"the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light"

Of which in a few of your photos are most likely very bright sources of light being bounced off of something shiny. lol aka glare :P

1 & 3 really stand out to me.   :rockingout:  Especially #3!!  I just love the colors bouncing off the machining of the metal.  And you gave more than just the emblems, you gave the depth of the trunk line up to the rear window.  The more I look at the picture, there is so much detail that I keep finding more things.  Like the dent, the pitting/water drops on the strip, the age on the key hole, and the sky line on the curvature of the trunk.  This is a picture I would buy.

But 2 & 4 are the pictures that everybody would take.  I really don't like the straight on shots.  (but it works for #3, because you gave more to the picture)  But, I love old classic chevy emblems.  I'm a GM man first and foremost.  They still look good, but I'm looking for more in the picture.

First of all the Grand National emblem, weak to me.  By the way, the Grand National emblem signifies turbo charged v-6.  I've seen these cars in stock form lifting the front end off the ground and stomping blown big blocks away.

My favorites are 2-4.  With a slight exception, you need to wear a palm tree costume when taking pictures.   :rofl2:  But looking beyond the reflections of the photographer, it is by far my favorite.  But I do love the hood ornaments.

I like #1...IMO, there are no two letters that evoke the muscle image than SS.

#4 captures the "space age" image Detroit was trying to bring out in all the cars of that day...the image looks as if it's ready for take off into the land of tomorrow.

This is my favorite of this bunch...the colors and patterns reflected in the ornament,  along with the ornament's color, offer a nice contrast to the hood's color.

you mention the horizon being straight in a few of those, is this a pretty important feature of any well took shot or something?  whats "rotated 2 degrees CCW" mean? and what does "flash turned down half stop" mean?
Thanks for the info man, you seem like you know what your doing ha ha ha
