Gears for dummies

Can someone please explain to me the concept of gearing, spools, lockers, etc??  What are some of the differences, how they work? I honestly have no idea and I dont want to get in over my head.  what is the difference between a locker that replaces the spiders and one that replaces other stuff?   What are some adverse effects of lockers, spools, etc. especially on an IFS?
