Big fire at local mill

Not here in Redding, but over in the town where I grew up and where my parents live.  This is going to suck for the town for a while!

Yeah, it really bites, and I hope they will rebuild it and continue to operate. Unlike a lot of people, we stayed away from there -- I know better than to add to the congestion just to get a better look. So I haven't seen it yet but the pictures look pretty bad. It started about 10:30am and put up an awful lot of smoke. They had air tankers & helicopters on it very quickly and by noon it was just putting out a whitish smoke and was winding down. Fire did not spread to nearby buildings, log decks, or stacks of finished lumber (whew!).

That mill has done their best to remain open through tough times, and remains the only big employer around here (130 people, per the article). It would be easy for them to ship out the lumber and send the logs to other mills. I really do hope they rebuild it...  this town would never be the same without the mill.

Update -- the cause of the fire has been determined -- it was a spark from a welder’s torch.  :ack:

I don't know any particulars so I won't speculate.... but I am glad I'm not in his shoes right now.

No kiddin  :yikes:  Whenever I weld or grind I have a charged hose laying nearby, and always start by spraying down any nearby vegatation.

Didn't say that anywhere in the article  :headscratch:  I'm sure it'll keep some contractors busy for a while, and the mill will undoubtedly restructure and keep as many people working as possible.  Probably depends on how much actual equipment was destroyed and will need to be replaced.

The mill manager stated on TV that they will rebuild. :thumbs:  No timeframe mentioned, but likely a number of months before the mill can resume operations. It was gutted and all they can do now is ship out lumber, until their supply is gone. In the meantime, my guess is that many (if not most) of the mill employees will be collecting unemployment. The good news is that it will just be a temporary situation, and they will have jobs once again.  :twocents:
