Burning oil?
« on: Sep 07, 2009, 06:44:44 PM »
I recently replaced all gaskets and seals on my 20r engine. Got the head resurfaced and cleaned and replaced all of the valve stem seals.

I now lose about a quart of oil every 50 miles or so. There's not a constant stream of blue smoke coming out, but when I gas it hard a few times you can see a small cloud of blue smoke.

When I am downshifting and coming to a stop you can see blue smoke coming out as well.

I did a compression test and here's the numbers.

Cylinder 1: 135
Cylinder 2: 135
Cylinder 3: 120
Cylinder 4: 130

When I put a small amount of oil down cylinder #3 the compression jumps up to 130.

I was thinking I had a cracked ring on 3 but when I check the spark plugs, none of them have any sign of burning any oil. They are a light tanish color like they should be.

Any thoughts on what else I can check? There's no leaks whatsoever.

Maybe it's just me but 1 quart every 50 miles is insane. I'm gonna assume you did a wet test on all 4 cylinders. Did you do a leak down test?
It was just crazy to see this deer leap all suicidal style off this embankment right in front of us.

Your compression is low in all cylinders.  143 is toyota spec for low end.  Your rings are toast and I willing to bet your valve guide seals are done 2.  Time for a rebuild sorry.

yea, the 20R is a tired little motor,  130 isnt extremely bad, but sure isnt good by a long shot

why didnt you look at the bottom end when you had the head off??

did you replace the valve stem seals?? if the head is done,  find yourself a 81-84 year 22R block thats in good shape ie pistons dont wiggle around in the cylinders and the rod/main bearings are good, even if they are good and tight i would replace them with whatever size they have, you can find the size stamped into the bottom of the bearings, if no number like .010 or .020 are there then they are stock/standard size

they 20R head you have and timing components will all bolt right onto the 22R block

why a 22R block??  because its identical to the 20R block but it has a 92mm bore instead of a 88.5 mm = more power

he did a wet test on the weak cylinder, all in all its worn out

a qt every 50 miles aint bad,  once upon a time my engine used a qt every 10 miles :suprised:

Thx for the replies guys.

When I tore this thing apart I found that I had a 22r head on a 20r block.

I wasn't leaning toward bad rings since the spark plugs are a perfect tan color.

Should've took the bottom end apart when it was out..  ooooooh welll.

Oh ya, my tailpipe shoots out black liquid too, oil maybe?  It's pretty watery, doesn't smell like gas or oil, just exhaust but probably oil.

Good point. If ones bad then they're all bad.  Didin't think at about that at the time.

And a quart every 10 miles makes one every 50 seem minuscule, but that's still a lot of oil/
