79 build "Energizer Bunny"
« on: Aug 28, 2009, 07:59:11 PM »
This is what i have been doing with my spare time and money. I am doing all the work in my garage with me, myself, and I, and occasionally my friends and family. I love rockcrawling and have been addicted to it for as long as i can remember so i figured it is time to build my own truck. The truck is a 79 Toyota 4x4 hilux longbed, jeeps are overrated, and the goal is to make a capable, reliable, and street legal crawler. Right now my truck is just a lawn ornament but soon it will be a mall crawler then someday soon after that I can go play on the rocks.
Specs so far:
20r(only 100,000 original miles!) with 32/36 Weber
5" all pro, marlin, sky lift
high steer
89 rearend with 5.29's and a Detroit
trussed front with stock gears open
35" bfg mt with steel wheels off a new fj (wrong offset)

Soon to come:
bed bob
:turtle: dual cases and 5 speed
sliders, bumpers, cage
high pinion front diff with 5.29's and arb
37" mtr's
bobby long 30 spline super axles
chromoly rear axles
rebuild front axle
and more I just can't remember

And pics:
Stock

Front

Front done

Rear springs on

"Energizer bunny"

Parts laying around

Thats it for now. Updates soon.

Just got back from the tire store. I have four 37x12.50x15 mtr's coming in a week! :disturbed:  It took the guy about twenty minutes to trac some down! He said they are getting hard to find because the new kevlar edition is going to replace the older version!  :yikes:

Thanks for all the compliments. Whats next on the list? I am tearing the 4 speed out and putting in the 5 speed, duals :disturbed:, and the Sky Manufacturing crossmember. Then get a drive shaft built and it will be out on the street again! Mall crawler status baby!

Here are some more pics of my new mtr's. They are a little better than the ones in my garage. I noticed that my front end is noticably taller than the rear and i'm thinkin that if my bumpers and cage don't even things out I might swap the front 5" springs out for some 4" lift springs. I am going to buy longer rear shackles and move the shackle mount foward because I don't like the angle it is at and I would like to gain a little more down(droop) travel, but I don't think it is going to effect the height of the rear much.
Anyway I'm really diggin my new tires so here are the pics.

??? :help: OK I'm about to do my transmition swap but i have a couple of questions since i have never done this before, yes I have a service manual. First will my clutch for my 20r 4 speed work for my 5 speed (i was told all clutches are the same for the different 4 bangers and transmitions)? Second will the clutch fork assemble(what ever goes in in the square hole on the side of the transmition) from my 4 speed work with my 5 speed or do i need to find one for my 5 speed transmition? Third would be is this pretty straight forward or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

OK I have been searching and this is what i have found. I need an 81 or newer slave cylinder, fork, release bearing and collar for my 5 speed. All I need to know is do I need to replace my clutch and flywheel with a later model version or can I use the one for my 79 and is there anything else I'm missing?

Well......I'm back. I've had this truck just parked for a couple of months now and I really haven't been motivated to do anything...I'm buying a dedicated DD here soon and I've decided to get this beast on the rocks ASAP!! So I'm holding off on another project I was just getting ready to start and putting in the time to finish this piece...unfortunantly I'm headed back to college so money is going to be tight but I'll have plenty of time to work on her now that I'm quitting my full time job and getting a part time one so I can focus on school. Anyway thanks to a friend getting a truck and wanting to go wheelin I'm back at it so here is the recent progress: In goes the 5-speed and duals

That's it for now, I thought I had a pic of it sittin there all done and painted but nada so I'll get one up soon
