Right on Pat, I knew you'd pull through   I lost my job at the beginning of july and haven't been able to afford to go hunting this year.  If my freezer hadn't taken a dump right after and if I had bucks walking through the property like last year, I woulda bit the bullet and bought my license and a tag or two, but too many things went down at the same time.

scored this toad this morning, he was the 6th buck i saw this morning which happened to be the first day i hunted this season.  They were totally in the rut fighting, grunting and all that business it was really cool seeing that and im super stoked on it.  Im going to take him in to get mounted here in a few days and hopefully have him scored because I think he should make boone and crocket pretty easy

kneedownnate

Jesus H Pat, that's awesome!  I assume you got that on your property?  You guys seem to have a stranglehold on big bucks!

ya thats out B-zone property, since it wasnt hunted till today the fact that it was surrounded by a pounded deer club had it stacked with bucks because they thought it was safe.  there were 5 in view when i shot him along with about 20 does.  did you shoot that bear

Ramrod

kneedownnate

They messed up, huh  :haha:  I didn't shoot that bear, actually never shot a bear.  I switched to that avatar after a board member was whining about how they didn't think people should shoot bears.  I like the pic so I left it up  :gap:

What were the other bucks like?  Are you gettin another tag?  You plannin on going shed hunting later too?

there was another buck i saw earlier i almost shot he was a forked horn but almost as heavy as this one with huge eyegaurds and a wierd extra point on his left side but i decided to pass because it was only my first morning and it had just got light, then there was also a very nice 3 point i probably would have shot in the same meadow as the buck I got but the fog came in for a minute while I was planning a stalk and he dissapeared  by the time it cleared, the other three were just small bucks maybe small 3 points it was hard to tell I was a good ways away and it was pretty foggy.  Im not getting another tag, season closes on sunday and im up right now to go hunt the duck opener at grizzly not to mention im exhausted from work still.  Ill be shed hunting hard this spring for sure, already scored 28 sheds on kodiak island

Ramrod

scored an easy limit of ducks out at grizzly island earlier today that was fun, good to see my buddies.  Talked to the taxidermist and im dropping off my buck tomorrow afternoon.  I cant wait

Here's a link to a site about blacktail deer.  First page tells about their evolution and is a good read, but if you scroll down to the bottom you can click the links for pics of deer from california, oregon and washington.  There are some pretty impressive bucks in there for sure!  This one was taken by a kid my brother and I went to school with, in an area I've hunted a little and hiked extensively.

Me and my Pop's used to go on the special hunt in Tehama ever year but once his health started declining we stopped going... it's been about 5 years.

I am gonna atleast get a D3 tag next year.. if not go back up to Tehama for the same hunt we used to do.

On a side note, I bought this safe the other day.. and a shot of my Smith and Wesson .243  :)

R.I.P to my Papa, I miss you pops......

Nice Shamb   Howa actions are pretty solid too.  What's the special hunt you went on in Tehema?  Something like Devil's garden?  I'd love to get in on a late season hunt too, I've seen some really nice bucks pulled out during those!

B zone 2009.
I shot a nice 3 x 3 with a G4.  This buck was with two other bucks one forky and one HUGE 4 point. They where 100yards off running TOGETHER through the trees.  I aimed at the big b*std and just as I squeezed the trigger the 3 point raised its head.  I shot it through the back of the skull and blew its horn off. ahhahahah

and the bear..
I was fast asleep on a steep ridge of oaks when I woke up to two Stellar Jays about 100 yards off making all kinds of noise.  I listened for a while and fell back to sleep.  A few minutes passed and I was awakened to a red squirrel in full distress mode. I figured what was making these critters excited could only be one of a few things.  Below was one of those things.
275lb Black Bear on acorns.  No better meat on the planet.
The picture below is 350 pounder from 2008.  I have the hide on my wall.  And NO I don't use dogs.  I track and call and wait.
My freezer runneth over

kneedownnate

Good work man    When's the bbq  :gap:

And were the acorns super thick everywhere you went?  The oaks next to my house are so laden with acorns that the slightest breeze makes it sound like I'm under attack from a squirrel battalion  :haha:

The spot with the 2009 bear was literally raining acorns.  I have never seen them so thick in there.

I've seen around 100 bears in the woods without the aid of dogs.  If I cared to bear hunt I'd spot and stalk.  Bears are everywhere, you just have to work to find them or know where they like to be, like you did.  Hunting them over dogs is a different experience, just not for me.

I totally agree!  I have been on a dog hunt and it seems more "traditional."  It is a very different experience.  It's not for me either.  I like the challenge of gearing up and hiking way back in for bears. it is a ton of work but there is a certain amount of satisfaction if you are successful.
Damn photobucket!   I need to pay to up grade to Pro now.  They keep shutting me down.
