Ok, I finally got around to pulling the cover off my front differential.  What came out was a shaft that was broken in half, and two gears, or chunks of gears i should say, that were about the diameter of a tennis ball.  I will post pics when I get home, but I was wondering what exactly that means to me, what I need to replace, and how much should it cost??
Also, any background on the front diff would be helpful because everything I know I learned today taking it apart.

Oh yeah,

sounds like the cross shaft and spider gears, dont waste your time and money fixing it, this is the perfect excuse for SAS !!

Hyena

Yes, ditch the ifs, it will be the gest decision you can make.  spider gears are crap anyway, lockers are better.

BLACKDOG

how much do spiders cost to fix?? :dunno:
I dont have a choice on the IFS right now If I had money, I would swap it out

BLACKDOG

Ok got some stupid questions

When I have a locker in the rear, that pretty mich replaces the rear gears correct??

Also, I am looking at getting the IFS third off the link Kyota posted up.  I had 5.29s and it has 4.56s  Will that matter at all?? I know it isnt ideal for bigger tires, but I need my 4 wheel drive back.  It is off a 94 v6 pickup.
Will that fit onto a 91 v6 pickup??

KYOTA

A locker like a Detroit or ARB replaces the entire carrier and the ring gear is bolted to it, a locker like a Trac-lock replaces the spider gears in your existing carrier. And yes the gear ratio's must be the same front and rear so if you get the one I linked to you'll have to have it re-geared.

BLACKDOG

would it be better to get that one regeared? or have mine regeared??  Since the spider gears and stuff basically shattered, would it be better to use a diff housing that hadnt had that happen?? or does it matter?

Yes because then it will feel like your axle want to swap places :ack:

I dont think it matters if  u use the same one or not

KYOTA

Inspect the carrier you have, but I'd guess that since that cross shaft broke, the holes in the housing where the shaft goes is probably wallered out a little. You may be better off replacing the whole carrier

BLACKDOG

Thats kinda what I was thinking.  Flying metal in small spaces doesnt do well.  Thanks for the input.  How much m i looking at to get it regreared??  About?  I've heard $100-$800 and anywhere in between.

I have an IFS Front diff assembly laying outside as well if it will help you out.  Its got factory 4.10's in it, but I'll install whatever gears you want if you send me the gears and a few bucks for labor, then send the entire thing out to you so you can just swap it in.
