So what is the deal with spools?? I know they arent recommended for on-road, but why??  Are these a good alternative to a locker for the financially impaired??

Spools are cheaper and stronger but dont unlock like auto lockers so tire wear on the street (corners) is much worse. Welding the spider gears is another option.

Mike D

so they would eat up tires like crazy even if you drove like a grandma.  ???

yes, cause they have no give to them (dont unlock).
so every time you turn it drags the outside tire, causing permature wear.
some people run the tires at real high pressure to prevent some wear, but it only helps a little.

Is that the only reason you wouldnt want to run them no the street??

Well tire wear and driving with a spool when its wet/snowy/icy can get pretty tricky if your not careful.

WHITE_TRASH

Ive driven on welded diffs for a long time and Ive never seen a huge difference in wear. :dunno:  Maybe I just have good luck.  I do see a defference in wear but not enough to concern me.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Mike D

does a welded diff handle like a spool

[holding  self  back   from    flaming]    A welded diff is the same as a spool just 'home made'   [ahhh I   did    it]

Mike D

thats what i though but i wasn't sure cause i have never ridden in a truck with them.
