My neighbor has a 2001 TRD Tundra and the front brakes are hanging up badly. It only has 70k miles on it. He took it to the local tire shop and they told him that the previous owner put the wrong type of fluid in the system and that everything with rubber in it will need to be replaced, including the calipers, abs unit, rubber lines, ect. to the tune of $3300. I find that hard to believe. Any ideas what would make the brakes not release like this?

Yes, if oil got in the system this would happen.  With the toyota 4.0l shops will use a brake fluid bottle to catch the oil from the filter and then someone tops off the brake fluid with oil.  If you dip your finger in the brake fluid then run your finger under water the brake fluid will wash off, but if its still oily then your screwed.  This means you have oil in the system.  If so you will have to replace that stuff.  You could rebuild calipers and wheel cylinders, too save money. Good luck.
