Drive shaft flange patterns?
« on: Jul 07, 2009, 10:04:11 AM »
So does anyone know how many different bolt patterns there are on stock Toyota (79-95 Pickup/4Runner) drive shaft flanges?  Front and rear drive shafts, CV joint and non CV joint?

To elaborate on my question, for anyone who cares to help or wishes to flame, I took a front '85 4Runner drive shaft and had a sweet custom long travel shaft with CV joint built for the rear.  Now I knew the CV joint wouldn't bolt up to the T-case flange, which was too small to re-drill, so I bought a trick triple drilled replacement flange that has so many holes it looks like swiss cheese but doesn't match up to the CV joint bolt pattern.  :help:

Appears the triple drilled flange isn't for a Taco.

1963-8/69 FJ40, 1979-83 Hilux, 64mm x 56mm x 8mm
1984+ Pickup, 60mm x 60mm x 10mm (non-CV)
1986-87 Turbo, 1988+ V6, FJ60, 66mm x 66mm x 11mm

The taco flanges are larger than this.  Get a Taco flange.  If marlin doesn't have it, I got mine from High angle driveline.

Owned by reading comprehension.  I don't know why your '85 d-line CV won't bolt to that triple drilled flange.

2nd edit:  You said the CV joint was built.  Was it the one that you sent in?  (Ie, '85 cv)  The taco cv's are larger than those tripled drilled flanges, so the new flange will be too small for a taco CV.

Hopefully this helps.  haha.

Hmmm... I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say the triple drilled flange is not for a Taco.   :headscratch:  Perhaps my avatar has muddled the waters; the Taco is my daily driver and not the issue.

I'm working with an '85 4Runner.  I put a square d-shaft up front using a donated CV joint.  The donated CV on the square d-shaft was from an IFS pickup (so I was told) and matches the '85 4Runner bolt pattern.  I took the old front d-shaft and used it for a custom rear CV d-shaft.  In theory the triple drilled flange (Sky Off-Road http://www.sky-manufacturing.com/new/detaproduct.php?id=111) should bolt up fine to a '85 4Runner CV joint.

The question, I guess, should be narrowed down to how many CV bolt patters are there for Hilux and 1st gen 4Runners.

So do I have the wrong triple drilled flange?  Is there more than one bolt pattern for early CV joints (I'm guessing yes)?  Or am I just working under the wrong assumption that everything on the 4Runner is original?  Why are we here?  Is there really God?  Does anyone definitely sell a flange that will work?  Should I source an original flange?  Should I find another CV joint and chop up the pretty custom d-shaft?  Am I rambling?

way too many questions, your best bet is to call sky and ask them, otherwise, you can search to your hearts content, but it sounds like you already know it doesnt fit

Oh, I know it doesn't fit   And I know I'll have to just buy a different flange or source an original one.  I'm mostly trying to figure out where I went wrong (which was just not calling up Marlin, telling them what I'm working with and then buying their product) and trying figure out just how many different stock drive line variations there for my own simple curiosity.  I'd also like to make sure that when I drop another two Jacksons on a part that I've got the right one.  :qtip:

edit:  Now thats a swiss cheese looking flange that Inchworm has got there.  I do believe that is the ticket.

For Sale:  New Sky Off-Road triple drilled flange.  Make offer.
