Hey guys.  I'm sure everybody has an opinion on this but I am looking for guys who have broken axles with large tires.  I am hesitant to upsize to more than 33" because of past experiences.  While in 8 yrs with a Toyota truck I have never broken an axle yet (Knock on wood - I use 33x12.5-15), but I have broken axles in the Dana 60 twice with 33" tires.  I finally had to go to Dutchman and have them make high strength versions.  Then I switched to the Dana 70.  Granted those axles were on a heavier, bigger truck but they were also bigger stronger axles.  It was operated at max gross weight just like we do with the Toyota

On any truck at max gross those tall tires make a long lever arm.  If one is running a locker and one tire slips causing the locker to connect hard, all the torque will dump to the tire and axle on the solid surface.  With that weight behind it things break.

We haul gear into the jungle in central America so we don't drive around nearly empty.  I would enjoy hearing folk's experiences with tall tires and axle breakage in the Toyota.

Any guy who takes his woman wheeling enjoys her. A woman who is owned is left at home to cook, clean, and keep beer cold. So if this offends you you should stop looking and go have some tacos.    :rofl2: And a beer. If your old enough.   :beerchug:

Thanks guys for the suggestion on the front axle.  Any stories on breakage with big tires on the rear axle?  That is where I broke 2 axles in separate instances in the Dana 60 using just 33x12.50.  What size tire seems to be the size limit for the standard Toyota axles front and rear at gross weight?  I run my front differential open just to lighten the load up there.  It is not much fun trying to fix something in the jungle.

Yeah man, they look great.  What is the paint on the 4runner, is it just flat black, or is it clear coated or just some kind of "satin" finish, looks cool, and way to nice to be spray painted.
