Going to New Mexico.

I'm going to N.M. in mid July to see an old friend and do some wheeling. Any one here live in the Taos area? Not really sure where we will be wheeling? He's in charge of that since he lives there.
My main question is about mud flaps. Do i need them? Here in Texas we don't need them and i don't  want to get pulled over for something i don't need here but need there.
