how to make double rear packs??????
« on: Jun 08, 2009, 10:16:32 PM »
i just did some spring swapping on my truck getting rid of add a leafs in the rear puttin in 63's and rears in the front.

I want to run 37's, but so far my ruf with one leaf added from some ghetto superlift springs rides too rough. I have heard about double rear packs and was wondering if anyone had some good combo's (number and which leaves) to add to get enough clearance and flex.

would just putting the two packs together be too much?  ?

nope put them together. take out overloads and if you want leave out one main leaf. Or cut the eyes off it and use it to.

ruf is one of those things that you just have to keep rebuilding till you you get the ride/lift/flex that you want.
I have 51" rears and I have 4 toyota leafs, 1 s-10 leaf, and 1 front 85 leaf (to support the s-10 leaf) it gave me about 3.5 inches of lift
If you have 48" rears I would use all toyota leafs. Start with 5 or 6 leafs per pack cut them so they are staggered.
Make sure you retain at least one spring clamp on both ends of the pack or they will fan out when you take it off road.

thank you guys for the tips. im pretty new at this stuff and when i was making my front packs i for some reason under the impression the less leaves the more flexy. i didnt really think about taking the spring rates into the equation. I'm going to try putting both packs together minus the overloads. I'll have to measure the length because i dont know if mine are the 48 or 51? they came out of my same 84 extra cab.

How much does the cutting to stagger them help? Would i be wasting my time trying to make the packs without cutting the ends off to make them stagger?

Combining both packs may give you more lift and a stiffer ride than you would want.

You should start with the main leaf from the second pack, cut the eyes off and put in directly under the original main, install the springs and see how it rides/sits after a few days.  A full second main leaf shouldn't stiffen the ride much/if at all, and will yield about another 200lbs carrying capacity/side.  Then if you need more height, add the second leaf from the spare pack staggered after the original second leaf, or pick up another set of junk yard springs and stagger the the main from it between your double mains and the second leaf.  You will need to get 2 longer center spring bolts, the stock bolt is usually only good for one additional spring.

IME each additional leaf yields about 1-2" of lift(includes the thickness of the leaf itself), and the shorter the spring used the more lift you get but also tends to stiffen the ride becomes more.
